3 ► Hinduism developed out of Brahmanism and is Ancient ► Hindus believed they could manipulate the material and spiritual worlds through magic ► They turned to prayers, _spells_, incantations, rituals and sacrifices to bring about changes in the physical world.  They named the power inherent in the spells, prayers, and rituals brajham.  Brahmanism is found in Hinduism ► Brahman-the one god of the universe ► Brahma- the creator god ► Brahmin-_priest

4 ► _Aum_is the main symbol of Hinduism  It is the sound heard in deepest meditation and is said to be the name most suited for God

5 HOW IS HINDUISM DIFFERENT FROM OHER FATIHS? ► Hinduism has no founder, single teacher nor any _prophets. ► Hinduism is not a single Religion; rather it is the practices of a variety of different religious groups which come out of India.

6 WHAT DO HINDUS BELIEVE? ► Hindus believe that there us a part of Brahman in everyone and this is called the Atman ► Hindus believe in reincarnation  A belief that the soul is eternal and lives many lifetimes.

7 WHAT IS KARMA? MOKSHA? ► Karma is the cause of a person’s particular destiny. ► The spiritual goal of a Hindu is to become one with _Brahma. This is Moksha.

8 WHY ARE THERE SO MANY HINDU GODS? ► Hindus actually believe in one God, Brahman. ► The gods of the Hindu faith represent different forms of Brahman ► Most Hindus have a personal god or goddess to whom they pray regularly.

9 The Hindu Trimurti ► The Hindu trinity is of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. They are respectively the creator, preserver and destroyer of the universe.

14 Where Do Hindus Worship?? What is the Hindu Holy Book? ► Most Hindus worship daily in their home and have a shrine. ► The Hindu building for communal worship is called mandir. ► Hinduism does not have on sacred book but several scriptures. ► The most ancient sacred texts of the Hindu religion are written in sanskrit. ► The oldest religious texts are the Vedas.

15 What are the Practices of Hindus? ► There are three basic practices:  Worship  Cremation ► The dead are burnt not buried  Compliance with the rules of the caste system

17 Caste System ► The Indian Caste system has long been a defining part of Indian history. ► The Indian Caste system has long been a defining part of Indian history. ► In the past, the caste system has determined a person’s role in life ►. People could only marry a person that was in their caste, as well as only get a job within their own caste

18 The Untouchables-Dalits ► The untouchables were the outcastes, or people beyond the caste system. Their jobs or habits involved “polluting activities”

21 ► Siddhartha Guatama found the path to Enlightenment ► Siddhartha was led from the path of suffering and rebirth and became know as the the Buddha or awakened one”

22 What are the symbols of Buddhism? ► The wheel of life which symbolizes the cycle of life, death and rebirth. The eight spokes remind people that the Buddha taught about eight ways of life. ► The lotus flower symbolizes purity and divine birth. ► Statues of Buddha include lots of symbols. There are 32 symbols in Buddhism which show that the Buddha was a special person. *

24 ► Buddhist believe there is a cycle of birth, life and death and rebirth. Unless someone gains Enlightenment, when they die, they will be reborn. ► If a person can gain Enlightenment, they can break out of the cycle which is called Nirvana. It is the end of everything that is not perfect

28 ► The sacred text (Holy Book) of Buddhist is called the Tripitaka  It is written in an ancient Indian language called Pali which is very close to the language the Buddha spoke.  It is a very large book-the English translation is nearly forty volumes

29 What do Buddhists Believe? ► There are three Buddhist central beliefs. They are known as the three jewels because they are so precious  Belief in Buddha  Dharma- The teaching of Buddha  The Sangha- the Buddhist community made up of ordinary people as well as monks and nuns. The purpose is to help others and by doing so to cease to become selfish and to move on the way toward enlightenment

30 ► Reincarnation is another important belief:  The concept that one must go through many cycles of birth, living and death.  After many such cycles, if a person releases their attachment to desire and self, they can achieve Nirvana

31 The Four Noble Truths ► Dukkha: Suffering exists ► Samudaya: There is a cause for suffering ► Nirodha: There is an end to suffering ► Magga: In order to end suffering, you must follow the Eightfold Path

33 Five Main Rules to Live By ► Do not take the life of anything living ► Do not take anything not freely given ► Abstain from sexual misconduct and sensual overindulgence ► Refrain from untrue speech ► Do not consume alcohol or other drugs
