Representation By Lauren, Kimberley and Hetty

What is Representation? Representation is: Literally representation can be described as imitation Representation uses one thing to stand for another and has been used to symbolically recreate something through something else Representation is also the ability of texts to draw upon features of the world and present them to the viewer as constructions.

Examples of Representation Simple examples of representation show what we see and what we associate with that image: Rose = Love Skull = Death/mortality

Examples in Media: Media uses representation to convey messages to the viewer/reader to interpret it in a certain way: Magazines use colour to put across a certain mood, for example feminine colours for a female audience and bright colours for an energetic mood Skins shows youth as rebellious, through the use of drugs, alcohol and their outgoing lifestyle. This is interpreted differently by different audience age groups: fun or trouble.

Theories: Saussure Signifier -The signifier is the pointing finger, the word, the sound-image. + Signified - The signified is the concept, the meaning, the thing indicated by the signifier = Sign – “Something which stands for something and means something to someone on some capacity”

Mulvey Mulvey’s theory of representation sees the way gender affects the way someone is represented she argues: Films assume a male audience and so cater more for them Women tend to be passive and men tend to be active which provides narcissistic for a male audience Women in films are objectified and are there to be looked at by men.

Dyer Dyer looked at the idea of stereotypes and argued that they don’t have to be negative and are a way of knowing your role in society. “The word 'stereotype' is today almost always a term of abuse. This stems from the wholly justified objections of various groups - - in recent years, blacks, women and gays, in particular -- to the ways in which they find themselves stereotyped in the mass media and in everyday speech”

Perkins Stereotypes help to reinforce roles in society. The way that groups of people are represented in the media affects the way they are treated by other people and the way they act themselves.

Our Product: Examples of the theory of representation in our product: The use of a tilt on the character of Samantha fits in with Mulvey’s concept of the objectification on women, as does her costume. The contrast in costumes between Erica and Samantha in our trailer relates to the idea of stereotypes as each reflects their position in the social hierarchy. Also the use of Erica’s glasses act as a sign to her intelligence/‘geekiness’
