2 Introduction The Flying Squad is a group of students who are trained in the use of a variety of software applications The Squad was introduced in 2006 at Coventry University The Flying Squad is based in the e-Learning Unit

3 There are 3 Squaddies in service, and 3 others trained up in any academic year Students range from the second year of undergraduate study to doctoral candidates They are drawn from all Faculties The work part-time They are paid in line with University practice for student employment

4 The Flying Squad can help with all aspects of technology-enhanced learning and teaching: Moodle Turnitin Online module evaluation The Wimba suite Distance learning E-portfolios Digital repository

5 Forms of support The Flying Squad provides telephone support And online support Squaddies are available to come to academics offices and provide support The Flying Squad is operational on Weekdays 9:00am - 5.00pm They are contactable via telephone, email, and skype

6 Example The Flying Squad is a service for academic staff, although students are also supported with using technologies For instance, I called the Flying Squad on various occasions when my students were unable to access Moodle during a workshop A Squaddie attended and sorted the issues while I continued to teach

7 Staff development Squaddies help academics in various ways, including: Developing skills in using technologies to teach Keeping students satisfied when technologies fail Learning about technological developments, including social media

8 Employability Squaddies can also receive support from the academics they help, for example: Advice on applying for postgraduate study References for postgraduate applications Resources on dissertation writing

9 Employability Students who work for the Flying Squad may develop a range of competencies: Communication skills Proficiency with technologies Self-confidence Autonomy Networking skills Time management skills
