1 Online Dutch-Frisian Dictionary Pieter Duijff, Frits van der Kuip, Hindrik Sijens Fryske Akademy Introduction The most recent bilingual Dutch-Frisian dictionary dates back to 1985. It contains 55,000 headwords. It is outdated and lacks in examples, collocations and idiom. Even though it is digitally accessible, it was not ‘born digital’. The social and political need is felt for a completely new, electronic, web-based Dutch-Frisian dictionary. The Frisian context Frisian is a West- Germanic language that is spoken by half of the population of the Dutch province of Friesland (around 350,000 people). Frisian is a minority language, Dutch is the dominant language. Language Proficiency in Friesland Frisian in education Primary education: Frisian is a compulsory subject. Most schools only meet the minimum requirements; 60 out of 425 primary schools offer trilingual education (classes in Frisian, English and Dutch). Secondary education: Frisian is a compulsory subject in the first year; optional exam subject in several schools; some schools offer trilingual education. Areas in which the Frisian language is used In spoken rather than in written exchanges. Used as a written language in: culture (theatre, literature, music) media (website of Omrop Fryslân, the channel of the province of Friesland) social media (Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, blogs) administration/ judiciary (incidental) religion (relatively rarely) The provincial government promotes and supports the use of the Frisian language in writing. The focus is on digital facilities (writing tools, dictionaries). New Dutch-Frisian Dictionary Source language: Dutch Requirements: Modern Dutch, wide variety of headwords, with many examples, collocations and idiom. Serving two target groups with one dictionary: 1.Speakers of Frisian who want to write proper Frisian; 2.Non-speakers of Frisian who want to translate from Dutch into Frisian. For now, there are no plans for a Frisian-Dutch dictionary, which is why this dictionary will also contain information about phonetic and grammatical aspects of the Frisian equivalents. Source Language Material Dutch Combinations Dutch Lemma Editorial problems Some hiatus in the Frisian lexicon have been filled with Dutch loan words. The Dutch word for peanut butter or pindakaas (lit. ‘peanut cheese’), for instance, is called pindakaas in spoken Frisian as well, although the purism nútsjesmoar (lit. ‘little nut smear’) is found too. Question / discussion topic: which form or forms are entered into the dictionary, the purism and/or the interference? Dictionary Writing System (DWS) ANW-DWS, provided by INL. ANW is a monolingual dictionary. Adjustment: adding a ‘translation’ field. XML scheme is the basis, programming in Java using a number of (open-source) auxiliary components. Additional programming for fine-tuning the software. Database & Interface The dictionary articles and their metadata are stored in a central MySQL database in Unicode UTF-8 encoding. The article XML is simply stored as a binary column. Intuitive Interface: providing access to information for different target groups through optional settings. Searching words, word combinations.
