IMPROVEMENT OF RAMP SITE FOR WORKDAY- RESTORE ST. LOUIS Wheelchair Lift Project

Background The Workday is one of eight units that makes up the non- profit entity Restore St. Louis. The overarching goal of Workday is to equip local and non-local volunteers to “directly assist the fatherless, the widow, immigrants and refugees” [1]. This assistance comes to fruition in many different ways, from mowing a lawn to performing major repairs to make a bathroom handicap-friendly. The work is done entirely by a volunteer force through monthly workdays and week-long team events throughout the summer. A major facet of the Workday is building wheelchair ramps for homes in the city. [1] http://restorestlouis.org/workday/

Design Problem To develop a solution that would take the inhabitant from their front door to street-level while maintaining a cost comparable to building a traditional ramp.

Requirements  Meet standards as per the ADA (weight, safety, speed constraints, etc.)  Generic or modular elements  Meet cost constraints (<$2,300)  Ease of assembly (low-skilled volunteers should be able to implement)  Subject to change over the course of the semester

Preferred Elements  Transferable, can be re-used  Lift (a lift that is door-to-street has a budget increase to $3,000)  Power source could be a household outlet
