English and Communication: Making Predictions

Making predictions When we read any kind of text we begin making predictions. What do you think prediction means?

Making predictions A prediction is like a guess about what will happen next. We can make predictions even when we are only given a small amount of information. However, they arent always accurate! The weather channel has predicted that it will snow this weekend. I think that you will really enjoy watching these films.

Making predictions Have you heard this saying before? Literally it means that you cant tell what a book will be like just by looking at the picture on the cover. However, we normally use this saying when we are telling someone that they shouldnt base their opinion about a person on the way they look. Never judge a book by its cover

Making predictions What sort of information do you find on the cover of a book? Look at the book your teacher has given you and try to find: 1. title – the name of the book 2. author – the person who wrote the book 3. genre – the type of book (eg thriller, comedy).

Now you are going to look at another text – a film poster. Answer the questions in your workbook. Making predictions

Plenary question list What new thing did you learn? What helped you learn today? Could you use this in another subject? What do you want to learn more about? Where could you learn more about this?
