3 Writing as a Process u Writing can be approached as a thing, a PRODUCT u We can also talk about WRITING as an ACTIVITY or PROCESS u A process is a series of orderly steps for doing something

4 Following the steps... uTuThe process involves alternating READING and WRITING uEuEVALUATING and GENERATING u“u“Writer’s Block” often involves trying to do various steps at the same time or out of order...

5 STEP ONE: KNOW THE TASK u STEP 1: UNDERSTANDING THE TASK! You must go through the prompt (if one is given) and understand the component PARTS. u USE A PEN! u ANALYSIS! u Create a CHECKLIST for later.

7 STEP 2: Generating Material! u STEP 2: Generating material (without censoring) u Brainstorming u Webbing u Free writing u Know the rules of each!

8 STEP 3: Figure out an ORDER uSuSTEP 3: ORGANIZING ufufigure out an order to your ideas, eliminate some (censoring allowed) uououtlining ununumbering u listing uYuYou Have to have a REASON*

9 STEP 4: Get a DRAFT down uSuSTEP 4: DRAFTING ucucasting the material in sentences and paragraphs according to your ORGANIZATION and choice of STYLE

10 Who’s Got STYLE? uAuA. STYLE come from the following questions u1u1. Ask yourself: “What is my attitude towards this?” u2u2. Ask Yourself: “Who is the audience for this?” u3u3. What are the Conventions and Expectations to Be observed

11 Still on STEP 4! u B. Choose PARAGRAPHS u Choose SENTENCES Why is “CHOOSE” an important word here? u WRITE!

12 NEXT STEP in the PROCESS? u STEP 5: EDITING u reading WITH A PEN(!) for meaning: effective introduction, thesis statement, topic sentences, paragraph coherence, length and organization, and transitions between paragraphs, effective conclusions, and the ORDERING OF PARAGRAPHS u Have you covered the assignment? (see step 1)

13 And THEN? uSuSTEP 6: REVISING uwuwriting ANOTHER DRAFT incorporating the changes you have made

14 Have I FINISHED YET? u ONE MORE STEP! u PROOFREADING! u final check on mechanics, spelling, punctuation, mechanics, usage and your typing before turning the draft in (make necessary corrections) u REPEAT AS NECESSARY!

15 PUBLISH! uPuPrint the thing out with Name, Date Instructor and Title uSuShare it uHuHand it in
