The Tower of London Prepared by: Rybalko Pavel 10 A, Alexander Kolosov 10 A

Tower of London - one of the main symbols of great Britain, occupying a special place in the history of the English nation. Tower, fortress, standing on the North Bank of the Thames, the historic center of London and one of the oldest buildings of England. Wrote the Duke of Edinburgh in his book, dedicated to the 900th anniversary of the tower, "in its history, the tower of London was a fortress, a Palace, a repository of Royal jewels, Arsenal, mint, a prison, an Observatory, a zoo, a place that attracts tourists".

This diagram shows the structure of The Tower of London from the inside.

The base of the tower of London is attributed to Wilhelm I. After the Norman conquest of England, William I began to build defensive castles to intimidate the conquered Anglo- Saxons. One of the biggest in 1078 was the tower. Wooden Fort was replaced by a huge stone building of the Great tower, representing a quadrangular structure, size 32 x 36 meters, a height of about 30 meters. When later the new king of England ordered to whitewash the building, it was called the White tower (White Tower), or the White tower. Later, when king Richard the Lionheart, were built several towers of different heights and two rows powerful walls. Around the fortress was dug a deep ditch, making it one of the most impregnable fortresses in Europe.

Today the tower of London is one of the main attractions in the UK. He practically has not changed since the days of the past. The symbol of the sinister past of the tower is the place where formerly stood the scaffold tower hill. Now there are a small memorial plaque in memory of the tragic fate and sometimes martyrdom of those who in the name of faith, country and the ideals risked their lives and took death".

Thank you for your attention.
