1 Documentary Film Note Taking For Use With: Vietnam: A Television History Frontline Films

2 Parts of a Documentary Film SymbolSymbol Visual Track : All the film that is included in the film. It can be shot by the filmmaker or it can be archival film from old movies, TV broadcasts, newsreels, home movies. This includes everything the camera saw. Audio Track : The Audio track is everything you hear. The filmmaker can include or edit out audio that was taken with the film and add other audio over it. Audio tracks include sounds that you would here if you were actually participating in what is being filmed (like talking) and sounds that you would not have heard if you were really there (think of a laugh rack on a sit-com or music that creates a certain feel) Audio tracks commonly use voiceover narration, music, and sound effects. SYMBOlSYMBOl Text Track : Any text, graph, or visual that appears on screen that is added after the camera took the shot (post production). Text tracts often appear as graphs, maps, subtitles, charts, time and date stamps, and name identifications SYMBOlSYMBOl Editing : The filmmaker combines the above three elements to create a desired impression and reinforce a particular perspectives, conclusions, and attitudes with relation to the films subject. When thinking about how the film is edited you are really evaluating the validity of the filmmaker’s perspectives, conclusions, and attitudes. Directions: Read over definitions for each component of a documentary film then design an icon/symbol that represents that element of documentary films SYMBOlSYMBOl

5 Video/Film Categories of Analysis Significant Events: This category is for ask for a quick summary of the topic: “what was that scene about?” “What happened in this clip?” “What where the major events that were shown”… Notable/Important People: This category records who the players are and what their role in the war is. This is the category where competing arguments and ideas are explored and recorded Casus Beli: In this category we discuss the causes and justifications for the war and how those have held up to subsequent events and moral examinations Significant Events: This is where we record single stand-alone markers – 9/11, Pulling Down Saddam’s Statue, etc. Mistakes: Here we record conceptual, policy, operational, and other errors that have frustrated the attainment of military and political goals. Sub-National Groups: this is a category for considering and recording the various groups that play different roles, have distinct interests, or distinct values that play out in the conduct of war and the making of policy.
