The U.S. admits more immigrants each year than all the other countries of the world combined. By 2050 non- Hispanic whites will be 47% of the population, down from 62% in 2005; Hispanics will grow to 29% and the number of Asians will triple.

AMERICAN ATTITUDES TOWARD IMMIGRATION

After 9/11 the percentage of Americans believing that immigration is good for the country dropped to 52%... Down from 62% earlier.

Democrats and more liberal Americans believe that there should be a path toward citizenship for illegal immigrants who learn English, work hard, pay taxes, serve in the military and attend or graduate from high school and college. Democrats refer to America as “a nation of immigrants”.

Republicans and more conservative Americans oppose citizenship for illegal immigrants as they believe it would reward illegal behavior and only encourage more illegal immigration. Republicans also believe liberal immigration policies (particularly since 9/11) are dangerous for national security.

Many people believe that (illegal) immigrants are taking jobs away from other Americans. Objective studies do show, however, that immigrants overall are a plus for the economy.

Arizona passed a law last April requiring the police to check on the immigration status of people suspected of being in the U.S. Illegally. The federal government through the courts has blocked implementation of the law. The U.S. Supreme court will hear the case this year in April.

Alabama has passed the most restrictive law to date. It requires all public schools to check on the immigration status of the students. Implementation of the Alabama law is also being blocked.

THE ALABAMA LAW HAS HURT FARMERS WHO NEED IMMIGRANT WORKERS

After the Alabama law passed, immigrant farm workers started to leave the state.

Potato farmer, Keith Smith from Oneonta, Alabama said,” I hired Americans, but it has not worked out. They show up late, work slower and are ready to call it a day after lunch or by mid afternoon.”

Blueberry farmer Connie Horner in South Georgia said, “You can not find legal workers. Basically they last a day or two.”

Agricultural businesses have suffered the most immediate effects of the new law. Farmers have said they will have to downsize or let the crops die in the fields.
