1 FUNGI

2 Cell Structure Eukaryotic
Yeast are unicellular; but mold, rust, mushrooms and truffles are multicellular.

3 Nutrition All fungi are heterotrophs
Some are parasites living off of another living thing Most are decomposers that release digestive enzymes to break down fallen logs, dead leaves, leftover carcasses

4 Structure Cell walls are made of a polysaccharide called chitin, (also found in the exoskeleton of insects, crustaceans). Cytoplasm and organelles can move from one cell to another in the multicellular organism.

5 Parts and Function Mycelium – extensive network of cells below ground absorbing nutrients, grows rapidly and has a large surface area Hyphae – reproductive part above ground (fruiting body)

6 Reproduction - asexual
Budding occurs in yeast Most fungi release spores (haploid) from gills in the sporangium

7 Reproduction - sexual Two sexes + and –
Two sexes + and – Parent hypha join & form a zygospore (diploid)
