The University of Arizona – Human Resources 3 A PROUD BEGINNING? 1885 -Prescott keeps territorial capital -Florence gains a prison -Phoenix awarded asylum and $100,000 -Tucson awarded University and $25,000 1889-Established as a land grant institution 1891-Classes in Agriculture and Mines met with 32 students and six teachers It was a bold move in 1885 to start a university in the middle of the desert before Arizona was even a state. Faculty and students have been on the cutting edge ever since.
