1 Rights, Safety, & Security

2  What rights do you have in a “digital” society?  Digital rights are freedoms extended to every student, administrator, teacher, parent or community member. Be aware of AUP terms of agreement “Opt out”

3  How can I be physically affected by technology?  Technology users need to be aware of the physical dangers that can accompany use of digital technology.

4  Carpal tunnel  Eye strain  Poor posture Having proper ergonomics (such as the desk and chair being the right height and size for the user) can help protect students from long- lasting problems related to unsafe use of technology. Physical problems arising from poor computer technique.

5  What precautions should I take to protect my technology in a digital society?  Students need to learn how to protect electronic data using:  virus protection software  firewalls  off-site storage Protecting one’s equipment is not only a matter of personal responsibility but also necessary for protecting the community

6  Does everyone have the equitable opportunities with regard to technology?  Everyone should have the opportunity to be involved in a digital society regardless of gender, race, age, ethnicity, and physical or mental challenges.

7  Assistive technologies for people with disabilities are necessary for some people to access information.  If there are students who do not have access to digital technology, the school/district should be concerned, and try to meet their needs.  Digital technology-based assignments should be integrated into the classroom if at all possible.

8  All users of digital technologies need to understand the rules and options when using digital communication (the exchange of electronic information).  Cell phones (taking pictures on a field trip)  IM (discussing class topics)  E-mails (communicating with teachers) Do you communicate like this?

9  Must follow AUP rules concerning e-mail and use of cell phones.  Never give out personal information that can compromise your safety.

10  Electronic standards of conduct or protocol.  Do not answer your phone or text while having a face to face conversation.  Put your phone on vibrate so you are not disturbing a group of people.  Do not use your phone in class.  Do not talk out-loud on your phone when you are in a meeting, movie, etc.

11  All users of digital technology need to be accountable for how they use digital technologies.  Are you using technology the way it was intended?  Are you infringing on other’s rights by the way you use technology?

12  Each person must take responsibility for their actions and deeds whether ethical or unethical.  Illegally downloading data music files  Breaking copyright rules with written information  Passing around inappropriate pictures

13  The process of teaching and learning about technology and the use of technology.  Users of digital technologies should use the Internet to help them find resources to various class topics.  Users of digital technology should understand the consequences of misusing technology to cheat in school (tests, quizzes, etc.).  Users should know how to properly cite sources.  Online learning is being tested in many school districts.

14  Information on the Internet is copyrighted and should be treated as someone else’s property.  You need to properly cite information you find on the Internet.  You must obtain permission to use a copyright work if it is not in the public domain.

15  All users of digital technology should be aware of the opportunities and problems associated with the purchase and selling of goods and services.  Users should be aware of how to purchase goods and services through the digital formats.  Users should be aware of dangers of purchasing goods and services through the digital formats.

16  Know how to compare prices, add-on charges, etc.  Beware of buyer “bait & switch” techniques.  Know how to protect your identity.  Know how to detect if you are dealing with a “good reputation” company/individual.  Better Business Bureau  E-bay & Amazon ratings for individuals.
