GEO Agriculture Subtask Updates: Building a Best Available Cropland Product (IIASA) Production Area Yield Database (UMD) Inbal Becker-Reshef University of Maryland Geneva, Sept 22 2011

PAY: The Production Area Yield Common Online Database

Current Status Database and web interface designed and developed Statistics from all agencies have been ingested User logins implemented Automated agency upload function developed Graphing capability added Data descriptions pages added Agency logos removed Data caveats added

The PAY- a Production, Acreage, Yield multi-source online database initiative Goal: provide a platform for comparisons between crop statistics generated by different agencies, through a common centralized online database of Production, Area, and Yield (PAY) – enable identification of agreements and disagreements in national level crop statistics Potential interface with AMIS Initiative

Database Design and Functionality Data on Area, Yield and Production starting from 2005 Current Agency Data: USDA FAS, JRC MARS, China CropWatch, Eurostat and FAO Crops: Corn, Soy, Wheat, Rice Years: 2005-present Data Types: within season forecasts, end of season reported statistics

PAY Web Interface

PAY XML Data Type Definition The data ingest system for the PAY Database and Web Apps System is based on XML. A rep from each agency can upload new crop statistics into the PAY Database once they become available using a secure login File Upload Agency Login

About the Data Pages

Example query for results comparing yields from the different agencies: Lines in blue indicate reported statistics, white indicate estimates

Graphing functionality Squares indicate official statistics Circles indicate in-season estimates

Next Steps PAY Workshop – Understand how stats are reported and generated Sources of difference – Assess regions of agreement and disagreement Using database for guiding methods for crop estimates – JECAM? Integrating individual country estimates – Subnational estimates Interface with AMIS? Decide as community how to proceed – some sensitivities about db and data

A new GEO Agriculture Subtask on: Building a Best Available Cropland Product (IIASA)

Overall Disagreement in the Cropland and Forest Domains

Disagreement between MODIS and GlobCover Reds: More croplands in MODIS Blues: More croplands in GlobCover

Disagreement between GLC-2000 and MODIS

Key Actions from the Workshop IIASA should initiate and lead a new subtask under the GEO Agriculture task, and work with the GEO Agriculture ‘Community of Practice’, to complete the hybrid map of current cropland distribution. A follow on meeting is needed focused specifically on rangelands mapping and monitoring. Tom Loveland and Peng Gong: To develop the validation plan for the emerging global 30 m land cover product and include the broader community. The GEO Global Agricultural Monitoring G20 Initiative working with CEOS and private industry data providers, should help coordinate acquisition and availability of the satellite observations necessary for operational agricultural monitoring. GEO AG Co-chairs: To develop the cropland initiative in cooperation with the global land cover initiative of GOFC/GOLD through addition of a sub-task under the GEO AG work plan.
