Surveys Investigation Jumpstart to Graduation 2010 Mathematics

Objective Students will examine the usage of samples and populations in order to use data to make predictions about a population.

Now, we will quickly review some definitions.

Surveys, Populations and Samples A survey is a set of questions that can be used to make conclusions about a general population. A population is the entire group of people or objects. Example: All of the students in a school are a population. A sample is a part of a population. Example: A class is part of an entire school. All of the students in a class are a sample.

Get in to your group. There should be 3 to 4 students in each group. Complete the survey individually, then compile the results for your group.

Sleep Survey Record your selections in your composition book: 1. Most nights, I sleep: a. under 6 hours b. 6-8 hours c. 9 or more hours 2. I usually make up for lost sleep by: a. drinking caffeinated beverages b. sleeping late on the weekends c. adjusting my schedule d. adapting to less sleep 3. I am most likely to not sleep as much in order to: a. Study b. Do chores c. Watch TV d. Hang out with friends e. I would rather get enough sleep than do any of these 4. When I want a good night sleep I am most likely to: a. Take a warm bath b. Read a book c. Drink hot cocoa d. Exercise earlier in the day

Sleep Survey Responses 1.a. According to recent research, young adults (ages 12-25 years) need 9 or more hours of sleep a night. This is more than younger children or adults who need 8 or more hours. If you are getting only 6 hours of sleep a night you are most likely sleep deprived. (0 points) b. According to recent research, young adults (ages 12-25 years) need 9 or more hours of sleep a night. This is more than younger children or adults who need 8 or more hours. If you are under the age of 25 and are getting only 6-8 hours of sleep a night, you are most likely sleep deprived. (0 points) c. 9 hours is the recommended amount for young adults (ages 12-25) and other adults need 7-8 hours of sleep. (3 points) 2.a. Caffeinated beverages will not help you make up for lost sleep. They may help you stay awake for a short amount of time, but at some point the sleep debt must be paid. (0 points) b. You may not be able to pay off a sleep debt in one or two nights. It can take several days to get back to normal. Without paying the sleep debt you may remain sleep deprived. (1 point) c. Adjusting your schedule to ensure you get the required amount of sleep is the best way to make up for lost sleep and prevent becoming sleep deprived. (2 points) d. Research suggests that you don’t actually adapt to getting less sleep than you need. While you may get used to a sleep-depriving schedule, your judgment, reaction time, and other functions are still impaired. (0 points)

Sleep Survey Responses 3.a. When you are sleep deprived you may have difficulty concentrating or paying attention. Research suggests that people who do not get enough sleep are at high risk for poor performance in class. (0 points) b. When you are sleep deprived you may have difficulty concentrating or paying attention. Research suggests that people who do not get enough sleep are at high risk for poor performance when working on chores. (0 points) c. When you are sleep deprived, your judgment, reaction time and other functions are impaired. (0 points) d. When you are sleep deprived, your judgment, reaction time and other functions are impaired. (0 points) e. Getting the proper amount of sleep is vital to maintaining good performance in class, at work, and in social situations. (3 points) 4.a. Relaxing before bed can make it easier to fall asleep. A warm bath or reading, especially when part of a routine, can help you relax. (2 points) b. Relaxing before bed can make it easier to fall asleep. A warm bath or reading, especially when part of a routine, can help you relax. (2 points) c. Hot cocoa often contains caffeine, which acts as a stimulant and keeps you awake. Other sources of caffeine include: coffee, chocolate, soft-drinks, and tea. (0 points) d. Daily exercise will often help you sleep, although a workout too close to bedtime may interfere with sleep. Exercising about 5-6 hours before bed is recommended. (2 points)

Can you roll your tongue? LET’S SEE! We would like for you to be a part of our class survey. Take out your composition book and record the number of people in your group. Then record the number of students who can roll their tongue and the number of students who cannot roll their tongue. What percent of your group can roll their tongue? Please record your answer in your composition book. Have one member of your group record the results of the survey on the compiled results sheet.

Compiled Results Total # of Members Can Tongue Roll CANNOT Tongue Roll Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Group 5 Based on the information above, what is the percentage of the class that can roll their tongue?

Based on the percentage of the class that can roll their tongue, how can you predict the number of students that can roll their tongue of the attendees at your school’s Jumpstart to Graduation program? There are 120 students attending. Name the population and the sample group for this survey. Write your responses in your composition book.

Time to Share 1.What is the population for your assigned survey? Give another example of a population. 2. What is the sample group for your assigned survey? 3. Is there another sample group for the survey? Explain. 4. How can survey questions lead you to draw incorrect conclusions or make inaccurate predictions?

Extended Learning Survey 3: How Honest is America? If you found someone else’s wallet on the street, would you: a)Try to return it to the owner? b)Return it, but keep the money? c)Keep the wallet and the money? If a cashier mistakenly gave you $10 extra in change, would you: a)Tell the cashier about the error? b)Say nothing and keep the cash? Would you cheat on an exam if you were sure you wouldn’t get caught? a)Yesb) No If you found someone else’s telephone calling card, would you use it? a)Yesb) No Do you feel you are an honest person in most situations? a)Yesb) No

Problem 1 A.A sampling plan is a strategy for choosing a sample from a population. What is the sampling plan for this survey? B.Suppose 5,280 people answered the survey, and 4224 of them pressed 2 for question C. What percent of the callers said they would not cheat on the exam?

Problem 2 C. Of the 5,280 callers, 1584 pressed 1 for question D. What percent of the callers said they would not use someone else’s calling card? D. The U.S. population is about 260 million. Based on the results of this survey, how many people in the United States would not cheat on an exam? How many would not use someone else’s calling card?

Problem 3 E. List some reasons why predictions about all Americans based on this survey might be inaccurate.
