Introduction to Computers COMP 900 St. Lawrence College Lecture Two: Networking and the Internet

The Night’s Itinerary Attendance Networking (Wired and Wireless) The Internet (How does it work?) Wireless Security Navigating the Web Web Portals Bookmarking Outlook (E-Mail, Calendar, and People).

Introduction to Networking To communicate, computers must be linked via a network. – A network is two or more computers connected by cable or radio signals. The two advantages of a network are – access to information – access to equipment To communicate, computers must be linked via a network. – A network is two or more computers connected by cable or radio signals. 4 How do We Connect to Each Other? A Local Area Network (LAN): The computers that are connected and sharing information within a small area. SLC has a LAN. To link with each other, we need ethernet cable ( or wireless signals), a network adapter, and a hub/switch. The switch is really much like an old telephone switch-board. 7 Wireless Networking What Is WiFi? A wireless network uses radio waves, just like cell phones, televisions and radios do. In fact, communication across a wireless network is a lot like two-way radio communication. Here's what happens:radio wavescell phonestelevisions A computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio signal and transmits it using an antenna. A wireless router receives the signal and decodes it. The router sends the information to the Internet using a physical, wired Ethernet connection.routerEthernet

Wireless Networking WiFi Hotspots If you want to take advantage of public WiFi hotspots or start a wireless network in your home, the first thing you'll need to do is make sure your computer has the right gear. Most new laptops and many new desktop computers come with built-in wireless transmitters. If your laptop doesn't, you can buy a wireless adapter that plugs into the USB port. laptopsUSB

How do we Connect to the Internet? The Internet is similar to a VERY LARGE network… with millions of servers and computers interconnected. To connect to all of these other computers, we need the addition of 1) a Modem, 2) an ISP, or Internet Service Provider (Bell, Rogers, Cogeco).

Why Do We Need ISP’s? ISPs are responsible to creating and maintaining the network infrastructure (“The Internet Roads”). ISPs place the cables to expand the network infrastructure, they will also fix it if it gets damaged. ISP also have DNS servers, these DNS servers translate the domain name you enter and convert it into an IP address. Your IP address is essentially where you are on the Internet map.

Domain Name System (DNS) An often-used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the phone book for the Internet by translating human- friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses.phone bookhostnames For example, the domain name www.example.com translates to the addresses 192.0.43.10www.example.com www.matthewclarke.ca translates into 74.125.228.44 www.matthewclarke.ca

Navigating the Internet

How To: Surf the WorldWideWeb Open the Application Internet Explorer by Left Clicking on the Icon: In the “address bar” type the url: slckingston.weebly.com slckingston.weebly.com

How To: Navigate the Web Left Click on the Link: Additional Materials Then Left Click on “Learn the Net” Your task is to explore 1) “Get Started,” 2) “Master the Basics,” and 3) “Surf the Web” Open a Word document and list a few things you learned. Title the top of your page with your name, save it as “Your Name Assignment 1,” and Print it. Help Each Other, and Ask Me : )

Web Portals A web portal is a website that brings information together from diverse sources in a uniform way.website Apart from the standard search engines feature, web portals offer other services such as e-mail, news, stock prices, information, databases and entertainment.search enginese-mail www.msn.com & www.yahoo.com are popular examples. www.msn.comwww.yahoo.com

Exploration Activity: Web Portals Explore the www.msn.com web portal.www.msn.com Enter the URL www.msn.com into your address bar, and begin by exploring the tabs.www.msn.com Anything of interest? Why are these sites often the backbone of the WWW?

Bookmarking Save the site www.msn.com to your “Favourites” in Internet Explorer. This is called “Bookmarking” the site so that you can return later.www.msn.com

Outlook On-Line: Email. Electronic mail has become the most frequently used application on the Internet. On your www.msn.com web portal page, select “Hotmail” at the top.www.msn.com Create a professional e-mail. Something similar to firstname.lastname@hotmail.ca

Outlook: Attachments It is important to learn how to utilize attachments in an e-mail program.

Outlook: Calendar & People Outlook provides users with an efficient way to organize your contacts and your activities in one place. They also provide on-line storage for your pictures, documents, et cetera. They call their on-line storage Sky-Drive.
