GEO Tsunami Working Group meeting 22 June 2006, Paris 1 Tsunami WG meeting 22June 2007 G. Rum GEO Secretariat

GEO Tsunami Working Group meeting 22 June 2006, Paris 2 Proposed Agenda 1 Progress evaluation A.Evaluate progress of TWG refined and prioritized tasks within the GEO Workplan. B.Evaluate current status of issues previously addressed by G-TWG for the Executive Committee: i. attributes and partnerships needed to establish the global tsunami system and ii. multihazard aspects of tsunamis relevant to GEO. 2. Highlight the lessons learned from the Working Group 3. Evaluate accomplished mission of the Working Group. The output of the discussion will be the basis for the preparation of the co- chairs report to the forthcoming GEO Plenary meeting IV and the Ministerial Summit, scheduled in November this year.

GEO Tsunami Working Group meeting 22 June 2006, Paris 5 GEO Working Group on Tsunami Activities  Met on five occasions * 1 st Meeting 7-8 Sept 05 at IOC Paris * 2 nd Meeting 3-4 Nov 05 at WMO Geneva * Informal Meeting 23 Nov 05 at APAT Rome * 3 rd Meeting 27-28 February 2006 at ESA Paris + informal meeting of co-chairs and GEO Secretariat on July 2006 at UNESCO-IOC, Paris  Provided recommendations on * GEO’s Role * GEO Tasks for 2006 and 2007

GEO Tsunami Working Group meeting 22 June 2006, Paris Activities of the Working Group on Tsunami in 2006 At the 3 rd meeting f inalized the 2006 Work Plan discussed a number of international initiatives on Disaster Management, i.e.UNOOSA- DMISCO, today approved as SPIDER program, WMO Natural Disaster Prevention and UNOSAT discussed the possible extension of the Working Group to a “all” or “multi”- hazard Working Group/Committee

GEO Tsunami Working Group meeting 22 June 2006, Paris Activities of the Working Group on Tsunami in 2006 in phase with GEO WorkPlan milestones has: provided follow-up the execution of the work plan provided inputs for periodic progress reporting provided inputs for the 2007-2009 GEO Work Plan. It was not possible to convene a fourth meeting of the WG, but the Co-chairs managed to coordinate with the Secretariat and to provide inputs and guidance.

GEO Tsunami Working Group meeting 22 June 2006, Paris GEO III discussions and outputs Implications for Tsunami WG - 1 All-hazards Committee One of the co-chairs illustrated to the Plenary the report on the Tsunami WG activities and, concerning the possible extension of the Working Group to a “all” or “multi”- hazard Working Group/Committee, he recommended to put in place a “all” hazards Committee, while keeping the identity of the Tsunami WG, to work within the overall mandate of the new Committee, but with clearly identified Terms of Reference (the ones in force today). Reference :draft Report on GEO III issued by the Secretariat

GEO Tsunami Working Group meeting 22 June 2006, Paris GEO III discussions and outputs Implications for Tsunami WG - 2 The discussion showed that there was not full consensus to the proposal among members so the Plenary decided to confirm the terms of the Tsunami WG and not to establish a “all” hazards Committee/Working Group. Even if not formally reported in the conclusions, there was general agreement on two points : The WG mandate should not be open-ended but connected to specific objectives to be met (and associated schedule) this issue could be further discussed in GEO Committees and by the Executive Committee.

GEO Tsunami Working Group meeting 22 June 2006, Paris GEO III discussions and outputs Implications for Tsunami WG - 3 Workplan 2007-2009 and tasks under the oversight of the Tsunami WG GEO activities (and associated tasks) have been rearranged in such a way that they are clearly contributing to the IOC Implementation Plan for Tsunami EW System and that specific coordination is put in place. The number of tasks in the Disaster Social benefit area in the 2007-2009 workplan is reduced with respect to the 2006 Workplan.
