13. What is your definition of schooling and education?

14. “Schooling should prepare you for your education.” (Teacher) “Schooling is the formal instruction you receive in a classroom. Education is the knowledge and the abilities that you possess.” (Superintendent) “Schooling is attendance in an educational facility. Education is the gaining of knowledge.” (HS Teacher)

15. Which do you prefer core type classes or the cafeteria style education?

16. “K-8 you need the core curriculum because confidence needs to be built in areas. Then from there on out you can do the cafeteria style approach because students need to build on interest in their field. A little bit of core-curriculum needs to be present so that they do have a little background.” (Teacher) He prefers the cafeteria style education because he feels it gives the kids more choices and does not feel it hinders their education. (Superintendent)

17. Are the students graduating today more literate than say 20 yrs. ago?

18. “The students graduating today are the most literate group of students graduating. Classes are formed around what is going on in the education system today. It's not that the students today need to know all of the answers but they know where to go to get the answers.” (Superintendent)

19. How important do you think parent involvement is in their child's education?

20. “You CAN tell whether education is a priority to parents. Some students come back with discussion about something that was discussed earlier in class as part of their schooling. It now becomes their education because they have furthered it. Some people who don’t view education as a priority let their children come to class with no homework even done.” (Teacher) “Extremely important, the kids today would not be doing nearly as well if it weren't for the parent volunteers in the classroom. For example, the Ohio Reads program in Ohio schools are solely run by parent volunteers. No matter how good the teachers are, schools can't be successful without the help of parents at home and school.” (Superintendent) “If the parents aren’t preparing a child for their schooling they will be behind. This is especially important when it comes to reading. Parents can be a great supplement to their child’s education.” (HS Teacher)

22. “Education does. Too many things are forgotten in schooling. There is too much memorizing in school.” (Teacher) “Education definitely, I mean look at the high school dropouts turned CEO’s.” (HS Teacher).

23. How important is cultural literacy to your schooling and your education?

24. “Schooling can help us be aware of all cultures. Having a little bit of everything is what we need to be successful. We need cultural literacy more in schooling in case we build it in education we have some background. Not everyone will be exposed to every kind of culture.” (Teacher) “Well, I believe that only through education can we gain cultural literacy.” (HS Teacher)

25. Should gifted students be separated into different classes?

26. “I don’t like them being pulled out. The gifted students are good role models for those less gifted. They need to be challenged in the regular classroom. The competition they bring to class is good. It is up to the teacher to be able to teach everyone. Gifted students bring good conversations and discussion to the class. If they don’t pull out the L.D. kids, why pull out the gifted ones. The classroom is like a sports team: it is as strong as your weakest player.” (Teacher) “It is a great opportunity for the gifted students. It gives them a chance to sharpen their critical reasoning skills. This is a great asset to their education.” (HS Teacher)
