1 2 nd – 6 th Rockstars Sept. 30 – Oct. 4 Weekly Reminders 4th Grade Literacy – Throughout our 6 stations (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading & Teacher Table) students will continue to learn comprehension skills, strategies, and vocabulary. This week students will be able to identify the chronological order of events that take place within a story, also know as, sequencing. 5th Grade Literacy - Throughout our 6 stations (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading & Teacher Table) students will build upon their prior knowledge of comprehension skills, strategies, and vocabulary. This week students will be able to determine the setting and the theme (message or moral) of a story. Open House – Sept. 30 (5:00-7:00) Fall Break October 7th - 11th Family Literacy Night - Monday, October 21st 2nd Grade Math - My 2nd graders will be working on adding numbers with and without regrouping and solving real-world problems. 3rd Grade Math - My 3rd graders will be taking a test this week on adding with and without regrouping, and they will begin subtracting with and without regrouping. 2nd Grade Social Studies - This week we will continue to study the reasons for the creation of the Constitution, recognize the opening words of the Constitution, we will also be able to identify the Bill of Rights. 3rd Grade Social Studies - My 3rd graders will continue our unit on the early explorers of North America. 4th Grade Social Studies - My two 4th grade classes will be studying the unit on Natural Kentucky. They will be able to label Kentucky's regions and describe 2 ways to help keep our state's natural beauty safe. 2 nd Grade Literacy I can identify the main topic in a text. I can us various text features to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently. 3 rd Grade Literacy I can tell, in order, the main events of a story. I can use the visualize strategy to aid in comprehension. 2nd Grade Science I can explain the effects of weather on rocks. I describe how Earth’s changing climate affected animals in the past. 3rd Grade Science I can describe the process of metamorphosis through illustrations and text. I can identify the parts of a mealworm and darkling beetle.

2 Bowen 5th graders will be assessed on Friday on heredity. Please remind your child to study their study guides to reinforce activities performed in class. 6th graders will be assessed on Wednesday over Chemical changes, they too need to study their study guides given out today and be prepared. Language/writing classes are going well. Our narratives will be on display by the end of the week. All my classes are now enrolled in Remind 101! Please use this tool to keep up to date on classroom homework and any extra credit activities. In science this week we will study negative and positive changes in the environment such as pollution, deforestation, recycling and habitat reduction. We will prepare for a test over our living things for the end of the week after fall break! Study guides will be completed in class and sent home as a study aid. Habitat projects are due Wednesday, Oct. 2nd. If you have any questions please email or call me. This week in math we are wrapping up our unit on estimation and number theory with a review of estimation, factors and multiples... Keep working on your division and multiplication practice! We will plan for our unit assessment on Thursday! Writer's Workshop We are beginning to work on our Fictional Narrative which is going to be a Mystery. We are learning the elements that go into a Mystery Piece and things are beginning to get a little MYSTERIOUS around here. SIXTH GRADE WRITERS We are talking about our Bad Habits in Writing and how we are going to stop feeding it by using it in our writing. After a few days of Non-Edification, our Bad Habits In Writing will start to grow weak and weary. Perhaps, these Bad Habits In Writing will end up in the Hospital due to malnutrition. (We will be filling out pledge cards on what Bad Habits we will be starving.) Literacy This week our literacy skill/concepts are: Flashback, Foreshadow, and Prediction. As we finish our first nine weeks, we will be taking a Summative Assessment this week on everything we have learned so far. Linder In fifth grade social studies, we will finish up Early English Settlements with an "Act-it- Out". Groups will be divided into Roanoke, Jamestown and Plymouth. Each group will teach the class about their assigned settlement. Next, we will read a play about the first Thanksgiving and finish up with a test. Don't forget students need to study vocabulary organizer and they can take the tutorial online. Later in the week, will we compare the New England, Middle and Southern colonies. In sixth grade, students will finish Mexico Today with an assessment this week. We begin learning about Central America and the Caribbean Islands. In fifth grade math, students continue to work on multiplication and division. Students are currently working on word problems that require multiple steps to solve. We will assess Chapter 2 this week. Please review multiplication and division with your students. Drops in the Bucket is due on Friday. Encourage your child to work on it a little each day and take advantage of homework help. We will be exploring fractions, numbers greater than zero and numbers less than zero in our next unit. Students will be working with a variety of manipulatives and technologies. You can check my website for extra activities to help with this concept.
