2 Hinduism Hinduism believes in idol worship, casteism, reincarnation, 'karma', 'dharma' and 'moksha'.

3 Customs To greet someone you need to bow down with palms together and say Namaste. The coming together of hands means, the joining of two people.

4 Science Yoga adds its eight limbs to the Sankhya system. These are: right attitudes, right observances, yogic postures, breath-control, control of the senses, attention, meditation, and absorption. Ayurveda, “Science of Life,” is the science of Indian medicine. Indian medicines builds upon the tripartite Vedic approach to the world. Hindus would do rituals that represented the way the sky looked. i.e. Third millennium BCE, they represented the stars with pebbles to see the sky.

5 Scriptures Religious literatures : primary literature and secondary literature. Primary literature (Sruti) are of divine origin, whose truths were directly revealed to ancient sages in their deep meditations. Secondary literature (Smriti) of human origin and were written to explain the Sruti writings.

6 Reincarnation In the sixth century BC, the idea of reincarnation had appeared. Reincarnation is the belief that the individual soul is reborn in a different form of death. Karma was the importance to reincarnation.

7 Karma An action that brings back results in the present life, or in the next life. “What goes around, comes around.” If you do something good, you will be rewarded, if you do something bad, you will be punished. Whether if you get caught or not.

8 Liberation The highest goal in human life, in which everything is accomplished. Also called, nirvana, kaivalya, mukti, and moksha. It can only be brought about through self knowledge. beyond all states of body and mind and not limited by them. A liberated soul possesses divine qualities such as purity, omnipresence, omnipotence, and is beyond limitations.

9 Yoga practices certain disciplines to achieve freedom from the limitations of the flesh and lead to the fulfillment of knowledge. self-control, religious observance, postures, regulation of the breath, restraint of the senses, steadying of the mind, meditation, and profound contemplation.

10 Dharma Philosophy The divine law Requires all people to their duty The peoples duties vary from their status in society.

11 Worship Involves images of gods and goddesses and prayers and chanting. Worship can either take place in the home, or in the temple. It is an individual act, involves making personal offers to deity Worship involves repeating the names of the gods and goddesses Water, flowers, and fruit were offered as sacrifices/gifts to the gods. Hindu worship can be placed into three categories Nitya Naimittika Kamya

12 Nitya There rituals are performed daily Sometimes performed three times a day Consists of offerings made at the home shrine Performing puja to the family deities.

13 Naimittika Only occur at certain times of the year Celebrating of the festivals

14 Kamya This type of religion is optional, but desirable. example: pilgrimage Pilgrimage allows a devotee to be see and be seen by the deity.

15 Moksha liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth and all the suffering and limitation entailed in embodied worldly existence.

16 Gods and Goddesses Annapurna- Hindu goddess of food and cooking Ganesha-the Lord of all existing beings, elephant-headed god Maya-creates the ignorance of the individual self Balrama-the protector of desires Garuda-the king of the birds, and often acts as the messenger between the gods and men.
