3 NCES Home Page nces.ed.gov Click on Annual Reports Click on DIGEST of Ed. Stats or The Condition of Education. For other sources… Use “Search NCES” for links to material on the topic of your choice.

4 **CCD Build-a-Table** nces.ed.gov/ccd Database populated with info from CCD public use files Put cursor on “Data Resources.” Click on the BAT option- (or other options as desired)

5 Follow these steps: Note links to tutorials and data sources. Click on BEGIN. Agree not to try to use CCD data to disclose the identity of individuals. Note that there are criminal penalties for such disclosure. Select ROW variable (6 options, from State to School)

6 Select Data Source CCD Data by Year 2000 Census demographic data by school district Click on NEXT. On next page note link to CCD Glossary.

7 Select Column Variables Data items are grouped by category. Click on a category to see specific items. (No fiscal data for most recent year of non-fiscal data) Select an item by checking a box. Click DONE to go back to categories. Then click on NEXT to continue.

8 Performance Limits No more than 20,000 lines No more than 50 columns Some variables missing for some states (not reported by SEA) Tip: Run a test table by state before running lower-level analysis.

9 Refine Selection Use selection criteria to customize your table. Break out high schools, middle schools, big districts, little districts, rural vs. urban, boys vs. girls, and many other comparisons. Can also break out by categories for appropriate tables.

10 Customize Output Can sort (ascending) by selected columns. Can move columns around. Output to print, Excel, or generic comma separated variable format. Can save table specs for 30 days. Can store in Favorites.

11 No restrictions CCD data on the website are fully accessible to the public. Some details are masked to eliminate potential disclosure of individuals. Data are presented in NCES publications and products, and in the press. Public release files are free of cost and copyright restrictions.

12 NCES ID Numbers Go to http://nces.ed.govhttp://nces.ed.gov Click on “Search for Schools, Colleges, and Libraries. Select Public School Search or Private School Search. Use Global Search tool or…

13 …Public School Search Enter a few search variables, such as state and city or state and partial name of school (only “core” words rather than entire name). Search. Click on name for additional information. If no result click on New Schools.
