1 Making bread in Ancient Egypt

2 How do we know ancient Egyptians ate bread?
Archeologists have found pieces of bread inside tombs. They had been left there by the family and friends of people who had died so that they would have food to eat in the afterlife. These pieces of bread are thousands of years old!

3 How Egyptians made bread
Egyptians grew wheat and barley. They shook the grains from the plants. Once the plants were fully grown, they harvested them.

4 Grinding the grain into flour:
Once they got the grains out of the plants, they had to grind them into flour. Turn and tell a friend…how do you think this woman is using these rocks to grind grain into flour? Show how you think she is moving her arms and hands.

5 Dates Once the grain had been ground into soft flour, the bakers were ready to mix it with water and yeast. They often added dates (a kind of fruit) to make the bread sweeter.

6 Ready for the oven Egyptians often used large bowls as their bread pans. They put the dough in the bowls, let it rise, and then put the bowl right into the hot embers from the fire. Other times, they made the dough into shapes such as fish, animals and people!

7 Turn and tell a friend…how do you think the Egyptians got the pots out of the fire or oven when the bread was done?

This is an etching of an ancient mural found in Egypt that shows the process of making bread. What parts do you recognize?

9 Visualize… We’re in an Egyptian bakery. Are we outside or inside?
Is it hot or cold? What does it smell like? What are people doing around us?
