Prolegomena Lesson 8 Chapter 3 Are there any other miracles for the Prophet Mohammad (S)?

Prophet’s (S) Other Miracles. What is the evidence that there were other miracles for the Prophet (S), then the Holy Qur’an? 1. Narrations narrated by multiple narrators or uninterrupted transmission in the books of the Muslims, regardless of their sects and divisions, these miracles are superior to the miracles of People of the Book, due to two reasons: A- Closeness to the period, then the miracles of the People of the Book. B- Large number of narrators, more than the narrators of Prophet Musa (AS) and Prophet Isa’s (AS) miracles. So if the previous messengers miracles are accepted then miracles of the Prophet (S) should be accepted to a greater extent or priority. 2. The Prophet (S) claimed that he was the best of all the previous Prophets, and seal of them. His miracles supported his claim.

Acknowledgement of the Prophet (S) to other Prophet’s miracle The Prophet (S) acknowledged the miracles of the previous Prophets (AS), and he was in a position to present miracles, and he did many. Bu there ere false prophets after the Prophet (S), who denied the miracles, because they were not able to perform. So they even denied the Miracles of the Prophet (S) so that people may not demand it from them. They supported their claim that Qur’an is the only miracle from the Qur’an: The miracles are two types To set proof To punish

Asking for punishment miracles 17:59 وَمَا مَنَعَنَا أَن نُّرْسِلَ بِالآيَاتِ إِلاَّ أَن كَذَّبَ بِهَا الأَوَّلُونَ وَآتَيْنَا ثَمُودَ النَّاقَةَ مُبْصِرَةً فَظَلَمُواْ بِهَا وَمَا نُرْسِلُ بِالآيَاتِ إِلاَّ تَخْوِيفًا {59} [Shakir 17:59] And nothing could have hindered Us that We should send signs except that the ancients rejected them; and We gave to Samood the she- camel-- a manifest sign-- but on her account they did injustice, and We do not send signs but to make (men) fear. God says the reason for not sending miracles other than Qur’an is that the previous nations were given miracles and they denied it, so God did not send other miracles than the Qur’an, because it will be denied too? The Respond: The miracles which God is talking about is the ones requested by previous nations, that is He is not going to give miracles based on their request, but if He wants to send without request or demand, He will not send. The signs of the miracles cannot be in general or absolute, but especially those which were demanded, Because their were miracles sent, especially the Holy Qur’an.

The denied signs were demanded There are certain amounts of miracles which are sent by God to set a proof, then if there is no further need to set proof, God does not send especially if the people are going to deny and especially after the demand, so those miracles were abstained and not sent due to no further need for setting proof. Usually the request and demand of people for miracle, after setting a proof comes from without any serious situation. So whatever is required to set proof has already been presented, and the demand becomes extra. Another verse indicates that there is no miracle: وَمَا كَانَ اللّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنتَ فِيهِمْ وَمَا كَانَ اللّهُ مُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ {33} [Shakir 8:33] But Allah was not going to chastise them while you were among them, nor is Allah going to chastise them while yet they ask for forgiveness. Indicates that god will not punish the nation while the Prophet (S) is amongst them, so if denying the miracle causes descent of punishment, and since God has secured the nation from punishment, then there will be no miracle While Prophet (S) is with them except for the Qur’an

The Respond: It depends on the type of miracle or the sign, if it was initial sign, and the aim was to set a proof, then denying it will not cause worldly punishment, but if it was on demand and was rejected or denied, then that is the type which God does not respond. Another verse: وَإِن مَّن قَرْيَةٍ إِلاَّ نَحْنُ مُهْلِكُوهَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُوهَا عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا كَانَ ذَلِك فِي الْكِتَابِ مَسْطُورًا {58} [Shakir 17:58] And there is not a town but We will destroy it before the day of resurrection or chastise it with a severe chastisement; this is written in the Divine ordinance. This verse also indicates that the signs or miracles of God abstained in the time of the Prophet S) were the type of demanded ones, which ends up with the punishment, such can also be indicated from the following verses: وَإِذْ قَالُواْ اللَّهُمَّ إِن كَانَ هَـذَا هُوَ الْحَقَّ مِنْ عِندِكَ فَأَمْطِرْ عَلَيْنَا حِجَارَةً مِّنَ السَّمَاء أَوِ ائْتِنَا بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ {32} [Shakir 8:32] And when they said: O Allah! if this is the truth from Thee, then rain upon us stones from heaven or inflict on us a painful punishment. Shakir 8:33] But Allah was not going to chastise them while you were among them, nor is Allah going to chastise them while yet they ask for forgiveness.

Another verse: 17:90-93: 90 They say: 'We will not believe in you until you make a spring gush from the earth for us, 91 or, until you own a garden of palms and vines and cause rivers to gush forth with abundant water in them; 92 or, until you cause the sky to fall upon us in pieces, as you have claimed, or, as a surety bring Allah with the angels in front; 93 or, until you possess an ornate house of gold, or ascend into the heavens; and we will not believe in your ascension until you have brought down for us a book which we can read.' Say: 'Exaltations to my Lord! Am I anything except a human Messenger?' These verses clearly state that such miracles did not happen. Respond: 1-These signs are demanded ones. 2-The non-believers were insisting on rejection from stubbornness and not asking for proof.

ABSURDITY OF DEMANDS 3-Some of the signs were impossible like: A- (KISAFAN ) demanded the fall of the sky, if that happens the earth and what it contains will be destructed and will perish, and will be the end of the world. B- Demand that God comes down and talks to them, and they look at Him. This is logically absurd, because God cannot be seen, and what they asked was impossible. C- To descend a book from the sky, if they ask about something written by god then that is impossible. If they ask to be created physically by God, that does not make any sense. 4-Things which are not impossible but does not support the Prophecy of the Prophet (S), and there are people they possess such things. –Yes it could be said that obtaining such luxury by miraculous means indicates the Prophecy, but the idol worshippers asked or demanded through regular means, and expected the Prophet (S) to be a wealthy person,

Expecting a wealthy Prophet such is indicated y this verse: 43:31, 30 But when the truth came to them, they said: 'This is sorcery, we disbelieve in it.' 31 They also said: 'Why was this Koran not sent down to a great man from the two Villages?' Miracles the Prophet (S) mentioned in the Qur’an: 6:124, 124 When a sign came to them they said: 'We will not believe in it unless we are given that which the Messengers of Allah have been given.' But Allah knows best where to place His Message. Humiliation with Allah shall befall the sinners as well as a terrible punishment for what they devised. -This verse clearly states a miracle happened and they denied it after seeing it with they accused of such being a magic. That means there were many continuous miracles, and after seeing it, they said it is magic one after another magic. -Qur’an is felt by hearing and not by seeing even -If the claim was true that there were no other miracles than the Qur’an, we will have to submit that before the descent of this verse there may be many which were stamped by being magic.

Conclusion : 1-There is no evidence that the Prophet (S) did not perform any miracles, other than Qur’an. 2-Presentng a miracle is not an option to the Prophet (S), it has to be by the will of God. 3-The miracle is obligation if it sets a proof and supports the Prophethood of the Prophet (S), other than that it is not obligated to present or respond. 4-The miracle which may cause the perish of the nation or punishment to them is prevented, either there is a demand or not. 5-Only Qur’an is the eternal miracle, not any other miracles are not eternal.

The Prediction of the Prophecy of The Prophet Mohammad (S) in the previous books: 7:157 and to those who shall follow the Messenger - the Unlettered Prophet (Muhammad) whom they shall find written with them in the Torah and the Gospel. He will order kindness upon them and forbid them to do evil. He will make good things lawful to them and prohibit all that is foul. He will relieve them of their burdens and of the shackles that weigh upon them. Those who believe in him and honor him, those who aid him and follow the light sent forth with him, shall surely prosper. 61:6 And when (Prophet) Jesus, the son of Mary said: 'Children of Israel, I am sent to you by Allah to confirm the Torah that was before me, and to give news of a Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) who will come after me whose name shall be Ahmad.' Yet when he came to them with clear proofs, they said: 'This is clear sorcery.' Many of the People of the Book believed in the Prophet (S) in his life and after his death, that proves that he was mentioned in their books as Qur’an informed us.
