Recycling 9/24/12

What are 2 ways to deal with solid waste? Waste management = control the outputs of the life cycle of a product by recycling and reusing Waste reduction = control the inputs of the life cycle of a product, by using less.

Where does out waste go? 54% = landfills 13% = incinerated 25% = recycled 8% = composted

Where does Electronic waste usually go? Undeveloped countries = countries will less money and industry. – i.e. Undeveloped parts of China

Why do countries lie about recycling? Because they can make money from a small amount of valuable materials. Workers recover a small amount of valuable metals from the waste and the remainder is burned and dumped in landfills releasing toxic pollutants.

Which Law is supposed to prevent countries from sending waste dangerous waste to other countries? The international Basal Convention Law

What are 2 types of recycling? Closed loop recycling Open loop recycling

What is closed loop recycling? Materials that are converted into new products of the same type. – i.e. Aluminum can  Aluminum can

What is open-loop recycling? Waste materials are converted into different products. – i.e. plastic bottles  fleece jacket or bag

How do we encourage recycling? Government Government can make laws to encourage recycling. Citizens Citizens can make their own choices to recycle.

What can be recycled?

Review Question 1- #1 What controls the amount of waste that is produced in the outputs of the life cycle of a product? Reusing and Recycling will reduce the outputs of waste.

Review Question 2 - #2 What prevents waste from ever entering the waste cycle? Reducing how much you buy and how much you use.

Review Question 3- #3 What products can be recycled? Paper Plastic Cardboard Aluminum metal Glass

Question 4 - #1 What percent of waste goes to landfills? 54%

Question 5 - #2 What percent of waste is recycled? 25%

Question 6 - #3 What is the order of the 3 R’s in order of the ones that uses the LEAST ENERGY to the MOST ENERGY? Reduce Reuse Recycle

Question 7 - #1 When people lie about recycling, where does it usually go? 70% of US Electronic waste goes to Undeveloped Countries (Poor Countries)

Question 8 - #2 What is the difference between open loop recycling and closed loop recycling? Open loop recycling is when a product is recycled, and made into a different product. Closed loop recycling is when a product is recycled, and made into the same product.

Question 9 - #3 What is the International Basal Convention Law? The law that tries to stop countries from dumping their waste into undeveloped countries.
