16 Religion’s Role in World Conflicts Also spelled Cashmere Large area on the border between India and Pakistan. It covers an area of 85,806 square miles (222,237 square kilometers). Kashmir's official name is Jammu and Kashmir. It has been the center of a dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947. Each country claims Kashmir as part of its territory.

17 Religion’s Role in World Conflicts Most of the people work on farms. Work in small industries, making shawls and rugs from cashmere wool. Corn and rice are the major crops, and there are many orchards and vineyards. Roses and jasmine provide oil used in perfumes. Kashmir is also famed for its wool and silk. Cashmere, pronounced KASH mihr, is a fiber made from the soft undercoat of Cashmere goats.
