What is Podcasting ? An audio recording posted online, much like a short radio show. Think of a podcast as a radio show. Each show consists of a series of individual episodes that you can listen to how you want — on your PC, using your MP3 player, or with just a web browser.

Definition of podcasting Podcasting is a term used to describe a collection of technologies for automatically distributing audio programs over the Internet using a publisher/subscriber model. It differs from earlier online delivery of audio because it automatically transfers the digital media files to the user’s computer for later use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting

Podcasting “Podcasting” combines two words: “iPod” and “broadcasting”. You don’t need an iPod to listen to a podcast! Any PC will be fine! Alternative terms would be “audio blog” or “audioblogging” “Personal On-Demand” & broadcasting, giving: POD-casting

Podcasting - What It Is A podcast is really just an mp3 audio file that is distributed via an RSS feed (by linking the mp3 file to a blog posting or to a web page). Current “podcatching” software, such as iTunes, allows the user to subscribe to an RSS feed; the software will automatically download new podcasts when they become available. iTunes

Podcasting – The Listener Subscribes to the RSS feed for the blog using “podcatching” software (such as iTunes) ONE TIME ONLY New podcasts are automatically downloaded to the user’s PC – and can be played on the computer The mp3 files can be “synched” to a portable mp3 player, such as an iPod, for anytime, anyplace listening – mobile learning – “m-learning”.

Emerging Technologies of the past –Portable phones once niche players in telecommunications –Hard to use –Cumbersome –Expensive Now considered one of the three things everybody has –Wallet/purse –Keys –Portable phone Continuing to change face of society, this tech is still emerging Emerging Technology

Podcasting & Emerging Technology Podcasting is a subset of RSS which is a subset of Emerging Technology Podcasting uses RSS v. 2.0 –Enclosures –Also includes videocasting –XML based –Download based –Not dependent on high bandwidth –Dependant on relatively pervasive connectivity Technically it is pull technology –Push / pull convergence –Subscription required –Has push characteristics –“Long tail” technology –Infinite number of channels!

Recording the Podcast we recommend using Adobe Audition 1.5 or above If it’s primarily speech: –record at 32, 56 or 64kbps –44.1 KHz, Mono or Joint Stereo –MP3 or AAC If it’s primarily music: –Record at 64kbps or above –44.1 KHz, Joint Stereo –MP3 or AAC+ Name the audio file –sequential –(or) Date sensitiveness

Editing the Podcast Any good multi-track editor would work –Adobe Audition 1.5 or above –Samplitude –ProTools –Sonar –Sound Forge –Nuendo –Cubase –Freeware Audacity (audacity.sourceforge.net) Ardour (www.ardour.org) for Mac / Linux

Polishing the Podcast Clean up audio –reducing background hiss and other noises, remove clicks and pops. Music Loops (if needed) –easily add intro, background, and transitional music to your podcast Use Multitrack editing –Edit each track in a way most ideal for its audio characteristics –Cleanly remove unneeded audio segments, and add or delete silence to smooth dialog sequences –Dub new narration for existing audio to a new track Audio Processing –Use the compression and hard limiting features to make dialog clearer and to smooth out unwanted differences in volume –Add reverb to simulate various acoustic environments Timing adjustments –Stretch & compress audio duration to fit length

Polishing the Podcast II Adobe Audition 1.5 Processing Audio Processing –Effects > Amplitude > Hard Limiting Limit Max Amplitude to -.2 or -.1 Boost Input by 6 or 7 dB –Effects > Amplitude > Normalize –Effects > Amplitude > Dynamics Processing Audio Processing –Effects > Amplitude > Hard Limiting Limit Max Amplitude to -.2 or -.1 Boost Input by 6 or 7 dB –Effects > Amplitude > Normalize –Effects > Amplitude > Dynamics Processing

Polishing the Podcast II Adobe Audition 2.0 Processing Audio Processing –Effects > Amplitude > MultiBand Compressor Effect Preset: Broadcast –Effects > Amplitude > Normalize Audio Processing –Effects > Amplitude > MultiBand Compressor Effect Preset: Broadcast –Effects > Amplitude > Normalize

Preparing to send Name the audio file –sequential –(or) Date sensitiveness Create Metadata –Author, genre, topic, content Create XML (RSS) information

Sending the Podcast FTP the audio file to an online repository(ies) Check for reception consistency

Publishing the Podcast Create (or add to existing) RSS/XML file Validate RSS/XML entry ( feedvalidator.org ) Inform Aggregator(s) of update (if needed) Test Podcast entry online Aggregator
