UNDERSTANDING EVALUATION MR. WILSON LMAC Bloom’s Taxonomy

Who was Bloom? The taxonomy was first presented in 1956 through the publication The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, The Classification of Educational Goals, Handbook I: Cognitive Domain, by Benjamin Bloom (editor), M. D. Englehart, E. J. Furst, W. H. Hill, and David Krathwohl. Bloom himself considered the Handbook, "one of the most widely cited yet least read books in American education” (“Bloom’s Taxonomy,” Par. 2).

What does this have to do with us? Well, you are going to have to write a Synthesis and then a creative piece with a particular voice or viewpoint – Basically the top two tiers of the pyramid. This means you need to be asking the right questions in order to move ahead to the next level. Here is an example:

Remember / Knowledge: Example of a question based on Remembering (or Knowledge) What are the health benefits of eating apples?

Comprehension / Understanding Example of a question based on Comprehension or Understanding: Compare the health benefits of eating apples to oranges.

Apply / Application: Example of a question based on application or applying what you know: Which apples are best for making pie and why?

Analysis Example of a question that forces you to analyze a situation: List four ways of serving foods made with apples and explain which ones have the highest health benefits. Provide references to support your statements.

Synthesis Production of a unique communication Production of a plan, or proposed set of operations Derivation of a set of abstract relations Convert an "unhealthy" recipe for apple pie to a "healthy" recipe by replacing your choice of ingredients. Explain the health benefits of using the ingredients you chose vs. the original ones.

Creation / Evaluation This is the final step because it requires you to take a stand (which is what you do when you make a thesis).  Present and defend opinions by making judgments about information, validity of ideas or quality of work based on a set of criteria Judgments in terms of internal evidence  Judgments in terms of external criteria Do you feel that serving apple pie for an after school snack for children is healthy? Why or why not? (can you see why this is much more difficult?)
