Scientific Method Review 5.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations by using proper tools and measurements

A hypothesis is an IF….. THEN….. Statement that answers a testable question. **How does the HYPOTHESIS relate to the question? Do geese migrate to the same place each fall? Example HYPOTHESIS would be: If geese are tagged, then their location can be tracked each fall.

Mrs. Conrad was growing tomato plants At her house. She wanted to see which colored light created more growth for the plants. What would be the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE? What would be the DEPENDENT VARIABLE?

What type of scale would these be used for?

If the above weights were used on a balance scale to show the mass of an object, what would the total mass of the object be? _______ grams

In the metric system, would this THERMOMETER be read in Farenheit (F °) or Celsius (C°) ?

What is the temperature according to this thermometer?

DEPENDENT VARIABLE S depend upon the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE.

In the Tomato Plant experiment the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE was the amount of food. It was the CHANGE (POOF!)

In the Tomato Plant experiment the DEPENDENT VARIABLE was the GROWTH of the plant. It DEPENDED on the amount of food.

Try this….. If you are trying to find out which shampoo makes your hair softer, what would be the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE? a.The shampoo b.b. The softness of your hair?

How many milliliters of liquid is in the graduated cylinder?

Amelia wants to know which cat food her cat likes best. The manipulated variable is the one that causes CHANGE. It is the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE. What would the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE be? a.color of dish b.amount of food c. type of food d.the dog’s name

A constant is: (choose one) ☺ Something that changes the results of an experiment OR Something that stays the same in an experiment

Miss Hewitt wanted to see which brand of popcorn popped the most popcorn without leaving behind the little annoying kernels. What would be the independent variable?

Mrs. Conrad was growing tomato plants At her house. She wanted to see which colored light created more growth for the plants. What would be the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE? What would be the DEPENDENT VARIABLE?

TRUE or FALSE??? The height of a giraffe would be best measured in liters.
