1 Cornell Note Taking Zena Bailey and Rebecca Hanson

2 S 1. SET UP YOUR PAPER Divide the paper into four sections. Draw a HORIZONTAL LINE at the top, and at the bottom of the page (a few inches from the margin) Draw a VERTICAL LINE from top to bottom of the two horizontal lines a few inches in from the left margin Complete THE HEADER T 2. TAKE NOTES ON THE RIGHT SIDE Write all NOTES, main ideas/concepts on the right side of the page At this point students should write as much information as possible A 3. AFTER CLASS WRITE QUESTIONS & KEY WORDS Create QUESTIONS and key words on the left side that correspond to the notes Questions should reflect information you don’t understand or want to discuss with the teacher R 4. REVIEW & SUMMARIZE Write a SUMMARY at the bottom of your page Summary should reflect the “meat” of the lesson – this is where notes are reducedS.T.A.R. Notes Key Words/Questions Summary /Review Objective:Name, Pd, Date

8 Ideas Make the “Summary” step the next day’s bell work. Make the “Questions” portion a homework assignment – put students in small groups or pairs to answer each other’s questions. In the “Summary” portion, hold students to a certain number of words/sentences. This forces them to become concise.

9 For the “Questions” portion, ask kids to write potential test questions (read my mind!). “Summary” portion could also be used as reflection – ask students to apply the current lesson to what they’ve already learned. Use this not only when you lecture, but for short reading assignments/chapter review.
