5 doc.: IEEE 802.18-03-0066-00-0000 Submission November 2003 Carl R. Stevenson, Agere Systems Significant Pending Regulatory Issues FCC NPRM on 5 GHz (ET Docket No. 03-122) –Report and Order expected from FCC November meeting FCC NOI on RF Exposure (ET Docket No. 03-137) –Comments due Dec. 08, Reply Comments Jan. 06 FCC Part 15 NPRM (ET Docket No. 03-201 –Comment/reply comment periods 30/45 days, but not yet published in the Federal Register ITU-R Trends on UWB –FCC appears to be trying to “export” US UWB rules through ITU-R –Getting LOTS of “push-back” –Latest TG-1/8 Meeting includes many documents on protection criteria for existing services, including RLANs (5 GHz RLANs have a PRIMARY allocation in the Mobile Service, and are, per the ITU Radio Regulations, entitled to protection from UWB) –Liaison statement to JRG 8A/9B stating “Further studies are required to determine appropriate protection criteria for RLANs”

Stevenson, Agere Systems Plan to Move 802.18 Website Currently, the 802.18 website URL is “non-standard” –URL is now http://ieee802.org/Regulatory/http://ieee802.org/Regulatory/ –“802 Standard” for “dot-groups” is http://ieee802.org/xx/ –Directory for http://ieee802.org/18/ has been created, but files have not yet been moved –Once files are moved and all links verified, the old URL will be set to “redirect” for a time –Once this happens, please update your browser bookmarks to point to the new URL –NOTE: This is a low priority item and may take some time.

8 doc.: IEEE 802.18-03-0066-00-0000 Submission November 2003 Carl R. Stevenson, Agere Systems Please consider (active) participation in 802.18! 802.18 needs consistent participation from all wireless WGs –Our charter is to provide “balanced representation of the interests of all of the wireless WGs” before the FCC and other regulatory bodies –WG chairs who have not yet done so are encouraged to appoint liaisons to 802.18 who are able to and will actually attend 802.18 as their primary group –Other members of wireless WGs who can attend 802.18 as their primary group, or at least substantially, are also encouraged to participate –Remember … attendance in 802.18 meetings counts towards maintaining your voting rights in your “home WG”
