6. 6 COAL AVAILABILITY SCENARIO  CIL Production -431 Million T.  Growth rate -4.31 %  Coal demand is more than the production which is met through import of coal. Performance hinderance i) Lower coal production targets against demand ii) Delay in clearance of new mines iii)Evacuation is a problem because of limitation in coal transportation and availability of rail linkages. Nearly 50% of CIL’s coal is transported by Indian Railways. For new coal fields, Indian Railway does not have sufficient freight moving capacity.

7. 7 iv) Deterioration of law and order situation in some of the coal producing States. v) Need to address R & R issues with the approach of inductive growth. vi)Technology upgradation – a) Development of Underground Mines using high capacity long wall equipment. b) Opencast mines with larger capacity machines looking to large volumes to be handled. c) Application of best MIS and ERP system for better and effective management of mines. vii) Acquisition of coal properties abroad to secure future energy needs. viii) Development of clean Coal Technology. Emphasis on coal washing, underground coal gasification and extraction of coal bed methane. ix) To bring reforms in coal sector with a view to improve production, productivity, safety and overall competitiveness of the industry.

8. 8 Gujarat scenario with respect to fuel requirement  Installed capacity of coal based plants -4000 MW  Coal requirement - 20 Million TPA  Proposed expansion in next 5 years -8400 MW  Additional coal requirement -40 Million TPA As we are aware, Gujarat has no coal resources available in the State and we have to depend on other coal producing States & imported coal.  Lignite based power plants -1040 MW  Lignite required -7 Million TPA  Proposed expansion of lignite based power plants -1400 MW  Additional lignite required -10 Million TPA  Gujarat has limited mineable lignite reserves -1300 Million TPA  Power & other sector annual requirement -25 Million TPA  Total reserves are just sufficient for next-30 years

12. 12 Lignite supplied in power sector by GMDC GSEC (290 MW) & GMDC (250 MW)-2.70 Mill. T Small CPP-2.50 Mill. T Total-5.20 Mill. T Taking 1.50 Million T. per annum requirement for 250 MW, GMDC’s lignite is assisting to generate 867 MW of Power in the State. This lignite supply is directly helping State in meeting the power demand.
