Cancer Risks That People can Control By: Ross Wesely Travis Arnet David Detweiler

Smoking (tobacco) Radiation Alcohol Vocabulary

Smoking (tobacco) Pretty much everyone that smokes knows the consequences of their actions. 80 percent of the people with lung cancer are smokers. If there is anywhere on the earth with increased smoking there is an increased number of lung cancer. Every one out of three people that die from cancer from the use of tobacco. There are more cancers other than lung cancer that are created from smoking. Like cancer in your voice box, mouth, esophagus, urinary bladder, kidneys, and the pancreas. Lots of these cancers came from tobacco.

Radiation Most cases of skin cancer are cause by the sun’s UV rays. Tanning beds make it a lot easier to get skin cancer. Sunscreen filters the harmful rays and lowers cancer risks. Human-made radiation comes from medical and dental x rays and from above-ground nuclear weapons testing any where on earth. Radon can be a risk of cancer for people whose homes are built over ground where radon is escaping.

Diet, Alcohol, and Physical Activity Alcohol lowers the body’s defenses against cancer when large amounts are consumed. Alcoholic beverages also contain toxins that may initiate cancer of the liver, esophagus, mouth, throat, rectum, lungs, and breast. People who drink alcohol on a regular basis increase their risk of some kinds of cancer. High meat intakes, high fat intakes, low fruit and vegetable intakes, and low grain intakes are the four factors (dietary) which strongly link to risks of cancer. People that are physically active reduce there risk of cancer, especially colon cancer. Those who don’t work out regularly have a better chance of cancers of this type. Physical activity helps to strengthen the muscles used to move the bowels and signals the intestines to move there contents along.

Vocabulary Melanin- the protective skin pigment responsible for the tan, brown, or black color of human skin; produced in abundance upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation Suntan lotion- lotion that may or may not have any sunscreen protection Sunscreen- a partial block against the cancer-causing rays of the sun Sun block- a total block of cancer-causing rays of the sun. Sun block has SPF (sun protective factor of 50 or greater. An example of sun block is Zinc oxide Radon- a gas that arises from the earth where radioactive materials are present
