2 About German The German language family includes: Dutch, Flemish, Afrikaans and English “High German” became the standard in the 16 th century (Martin Luther’s Bible translation) Spoken as an official language in four countries (100 million people) It has official status in 3 other countries and regional status in 8. It is also spoken in several American communities.
