First impressions 1.Chain can play a (key) role in changing gender relations Donor driven chains and empowerment programmes?? 2. Good practices on women in chains as examples and inspiration for others –‘Still’ have major gender questions to deal with (e.g. at end and beginning) –How women can be in charge of their own chain? 3. Potential role of external factors –Markets opportunities, special market demand (coffees/biofuels/bio-cotton), –migration, –role of cooperative/consortium

Inclusion … Women in ‘lower levels’; higher levels are male dominated Most interest expressed in inclusion of women (11x), and/or in changing terms of inclusion (14.5x) Gender impact is mentioned 14 times as objectives, but unclear to what extent this is differentiated from inclusion Confusion in guidelines on gender issues?

Theory of change? “Our assumption is that involving women, and a higher income for women, will give them a higher status in both their family and their community, which will in the end be more beneficial and sustainable for all. We are still discussing our ‘theory of change’ but currently we depart from the vision that fair and sustainable trade is the best instrument to combat structural poverty: a secure income is the basis for a decent and dignified existence.”

Shared learning on … How can women be included? How women’s terms of inclusions can be changed/improved? How women’s contribution can be recognized (economically and socially) and their voice can be heard (needs addressed)?

… but also on … 1. Is that beneficial for women, or does it improve the whole chain (production and quality)? Does that matter? 2. Does higher income of women really change gender relations? What (else) is needed to bring about changes towards more gender equality? Do activities need to ‘target women’, or other actors and institutions? 3. Why are women excluded, or is their labour not rewarded and recognized? 4. Is promoting gender equality similar to or different from combatting poverty?
