2 Introduction: The Student Support Services began at Oglala Lakota College in the Fall of 1993. One of the TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Dept. of Education. Serves 200 students a year, 50 students from Pine Ridge/Oglala

3 Student Support Services Program Purpose: To provide opportunities for academic development To assist students with OLC requirements. To motivate or help students reach the completion of their academic goals.

4 Program Eligibility: The program targets students who are First Generation-meaning your parents do not have a four year degree. Low-income Students with disabilities.

5 Student Support Services Program The SSS Program will assist eligible student with academic related problems and provide a network of support services. By providing these services, the SSS Program helps increase college retention and graduation rates The SSS Staff coordinates services with all District centers to better serve program participants.

6 Services: Tutoring-the main service component Tutor Labs (Friday or Sunday) Mentoring Peer Mentoring Academic Advising Personal Counseling Financial Aid application assistance Scholarship Application help Cultural Activities Other Services

7 Peer Mentoring Program The main purpose is to assist new and Freshman Students with adjusting to the academic environment at OLC. The peer mentor: Is a Junior or Senior in good standing. Is a Full or ¾ time student. Is Computer literate Understands the OLC Student Handbook Is Flexible Provides Tutoring if needed.

8 Peer Mentoring Participants Student Participants: Must be First Generation and Low income. New OLC Students Freshman (less than 30 credit hours) BE willing to meet with and maintain contact with Peer Mentor and SSS Staff BE active in program activities

9 Grant Aid To receive SSS program grant aid, students must be current participants in the SSS project who are Freshman and receiving PELL. Student MUST successfully complete 12 credit hours per semester in order to receive Grant Aid. Student MUST be active in the SSS Program (receive tutoring, attend workshops and other activities).
