At the UH, we have several programs and services to guide and support you in your pursuit of academic excellence. I will describe a few programs that can assist you:

9 Peer Tutoring  What do we ask from you to make your learning experiences during tutoring to be productive: Bring your course syllabus and any relevant materials, such as your text books, notes, etc. Bring specific questions about the material. Tutors are not expected to do your assignments or to teach you material you have not studied.

10 Learning Strategies Counseling  Individual confidential appointments  Identification of your learning style  Development of innovative learning strategies  Assist in incorporating learning strategies in your study habits  Address test and math anxiety issues  Help with improving time management  Help with improving your memory and concentration skills

11 Learning Strategies Workshops  A series of workshops is offered each semester Early Bird, Comprehensive, and Preparing for Finals Workshops  Overcoming procrastination, reading, note taking, and exam preparation  Must sign up online at www.las.uh.edu/lss

12 Multimedia Resources  Software varoius subjects –Math, biology, chemistry, physics, economics, statistics, MATLab Test preparation materials - GRE, GMAT Learning Plus - to practice basic reading, writing, and math skills  Videos  Captain’s Log  Books Learning Strategies GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT prep books

13 Handouts  different learning strategies Math anxiety, test taking techniques, overcoming procrastination, writing papers, reading scientific textbooks, and many more... Example: Test Taking Techniques: –How to keep calm during tests –Tips for reducing stress –Techniques for Taking Tests Note Taking –Common types of abbreviations and rules –The Cornell method of note-taking –A system for effective listening and note taking –Outline method of note taking

14 Graduate/Professional Student Support  Learning strategies workshops and learning strategies counseling  Individual consultations on research design and data collection  Consultation for Survey Design  Professional Writing – APA writing style  Development of Critical Reading skills

15  The Learning Center is OPEN to all students at the University of Houston  We have another program that works with targeted student populations, ie The Challenger Program

16 Challenger Program (CP)  The Challenger Program, a TRIO program, is funded by the U.S. Department of Education  The program seeks to serve students who are: first generation college students (meaning neither parent has a four year degree), and/or from a low income background (household income does not exceed 150% of current poverty guidelines)

17 Challenger Program (CP)  The Challenger Program currently disburses over $50,000 in the form of scholarships  Over 40% of all Challenger participants earn a 3.0 grade point average or above

18 Challenger Program (CP) Services  Tutoring: Tutors are available to assist students in a wide variety of academic subjects  Counseling: Academic and personal counseling are available to meet specific needs on an individual or groups basis  Academic Instruction: A three hour college credit course in Reading, Writing, and Study Skills is available for program participants

19 Challenger Program (CP) Services  Financial Aid Advisement: The Challenger Program staff will try to help meet the students financial needs  Social support and cultural enrichment: The program hosts campus social gatherings and opportunities to attend cultural events to provide social supports

20 Challenger Program (CP) Criteria for eligibility/participation  If you come from a TRIO program from your previous institution be it Upward Bound, Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), McNair or Student Support Services, you are eligible for the Challenger Program  And if you are: A first generation college student, and/or from a low income background

21 Challenger Program (CP) Update  The U.S. Department of Education announced that TRIO directors in Texas will soon be receiving additional funds to support displaced students who have now relocated to Texas either temporarily or permanently.
