Physical Factors (Skills) Impacting on Performance

Physical Factors Skills Fitness Tactics

Physical Factors -Skills Skill Repertoire Creativity Consistency Accuracy

Skill Repertoire The ability to perform the skills required within an activity is an essential part of performing well. A performers skill repertoire is the range of skills that the performer is able to perform effectively. A skilled performer will have a large repertoire of skills that they can perform to a high standard.

Skill Repertoire – Impact on Performance Having a large repertoire of skills that can be performed effectively is beneficial as: The range of options the performer has in any situation is large and therefore it is more difficult for opponents to read what is going to happen. It is more difficult for an opponent to cause a performer with a large repertoire of skills problems as they have a range of options available to them to successfully solve the problem. A performer with a large repertoire of skills is likely to be more confident as they know that they can perform a range of skills well.

Skill Repertoire Tasks When attacking in basketball what skills/techniques do you think an excellent offensive player will have? Consider the following feedback given to a performer. Explain why skill repertoire may have led to the performer getting this feedback 1 – “Easy to defend against” 2– “Started well but struggled after their opponent changed their tactic” 3- “Never seemed troubled and was full of confidence”

Creativity Creativity is the ability to perform unusually, innovatively and uniquely. It can be described as being able to face a problem and create a solution that is not expected or is different from the normal. Being creative can be shown in different ways, such as tactically or through a series of skills in the activity.

Creativity Tasks 1.List as many ways that you can think of that creativity can be used when performing. 2.Why is it important to be creative when performing? 3.What impact does having a very creative player have on a team? 4.What impact does a very creative player have on the opponents?

Positive Impacts of Creativity Being creative when participating in sport is important as: Doing something unexpected can catch an opponent of guard as they are not prepared for what the performer has done. This could give the performer an advantage such as: Losing or getting past a marker Creating space and time for themselves or team mates Putting an opponent under pressure Scoring a point/goal Being creative can help a performer find solutions to a problem. A creative golfer might come up with a solution when faced with a very difficult shot. A creative tennis player may come up with an unusual but effective way of dealing with a big serving opponent. A performer who is creative will keep an opponent under pressure as they will not know what to expect next and therefore will find it difficult to prepare.

Consistency Consistency is the ability to perform skills / movements correctly over and over again. Consistency is key for an effective performance. Examples Consistently getting overhead clears right to the back of your opponents court. Performing a skill such as a free throw with the same technique over and over again and as a result consistently scoring. Getting a fast first serve in in tennis over and over again. A midfielder having a very high pass completion percentage

Consistency Task Choose one of the examples from the previous slide. What impact will this have on: The Performer Tactics (physical) Mentally/Emotionally The Team (if appropriate) The Opponent Physically Mentally/Emotionally

Accuracy Accuracy is the ability to direct a ball, shuttle or any other object used in an activity to a target area with precision. A performer can also demonstrate accuracy by performing movements with precision so that they look exactly like a model performance.

Accuracy – Impacts on Performance Performing with accuracy will impact differently depending on the activity. Examples include: Being able to play the shuttle accurately to the back tramlines in a game of badminton to put your opponent under as much pressure as possible. Placing a penalty flick in hockey accurately to the corner of the goal to make it as difficult as possible for the goalkeeper to save.

Performing technique accurately is also extremely important. The following examples give some reasons why. A diver is required to show excellent accuracy in their execution of skills in order to improve the score they awarded by the judges. A 100m sprinter tries to perfect accurate technique to ensure that they are as efficient as possible when running to decrease the time it takes for them to complete the race. A basketball player tries to perfect accurate technique so that even late in the game when they are tired they are still able to score jump shots due to the effectiveness of their technique Accuracy – Impacts on Performance

Accuracy Task Discus the negative impacts of a performance that lacks accuracy. This can be in relation to a variety of activities. When discussing consider the impact on: The Individual The Team The Opponent The Outcome
