4 Textbooks Students should cover all textbooks before bringing them to school Include Name of subject on front First and last name on spine In addition, write first and last name in ink on the inside cover Social Studies textbooks may be kept in my classroom Name of Subject First and Last Name on Spine

8 Learning Objectives/Project Based Learning Learning objectives are aligned to Common Core Standards Most units have projects Projects are done in class. If students don’t finish, it’s homework Overall project guidelines (found on website) Notes, power points, and articles are posted on website Small quizzes throughout unit and large test at the end

10 Reading/Writing/Grammar Reading-literature textbook, novels, SCOPE magazine Academic Vocabulary/Literary Terms Writing 1 st trimester- informative/explanatory essay 2 nd trimester- argumentative essay 3 rd trimester- narrative essay Response to literature paragraphs- throughout the year Grammar/conventions

11 Reading Logs Students will be assigned to read an AR book for a minimum of 30 minutes per night for homework Students must track their reading progress on their reading log (kept in binder). Parents must sign reading log in order for child to take an AR test. Please check in with your child on a nightly basis.

12 Accelerated Reader(AR) At the beginning of each trimester, your child will take the STAR assessment test. Based on their scores, your child will be given their zone of proximal development(ZPD). Point goals are given based on the ZPD. Students read AR books within their zone (AR Book finder). Once completed, they will take the computerized tests. These tests can be taken in my classroom, before school in the school library, or during lunch in the computer lab. If a book is worth 10 points and they score 90%, they receive 90% of the possible points (9 points). Students are given a halfway point goal as well as an end of the trimester point goal. Students strive to meet the point goal for each trimester, which is part of their Language Arts grade. Renaissance Home Connect letter-will be sent home with your child’s username and password. You can sign up to receive e-mails showing your child’s quiz or test results. Link is located on my website. Halfway point and trimester goal will be recorded in gradebook.

17 Gradebook You can view your child’s grades online. The link for the online gradebook is on my teacher website under “links” Username: Student ID (6 digits) Password: Student's Birthday (March 5, 2003 would be 2003- 03-05): Must include dashes (no spaces). *Single digit months and days need to have the zero in front of them. The system will have you set a new password right away. You can also sign up to receive e-mails showing your child’s grades

18 Gradebook Key Blank space-grade not yet entered Z- didn’t turn in the assignment; counts as a zero 0-received 0% on an assignment X-excused; doesn’t count against grade

21 Assignment Policy Assignments must be turned in the day they are due at the beginning of the period. No late formative assignments will be accepted. Late summative assignments will effect academic behavior grade. During the first trimester, you will receive an e-mail or phone call if your child did not turn in an assignment on time. If your child is absent, he/she must make up the assignments that were missed. It is their responsibility to find out the work they missed and turn it in (absent binder, website, homework hotline).

25 Why? To better support all students Intervention, Study Skills, AR Reading, and Enrichment

26 Intervention Mathematics or English-Language Arts Support for meeting academic proficiency in one or both of these areas. Student placement is based upon assessments given (AR, fluency, grades, and other assessments).

27 Study Skills Students may be placed in a study hall E period, if they are failing to complete and turn in their work on time. Students work on organization and responsibility. Students can check their grades on-line to view missing assignments, and they are able to work on getting caught up.

28 AR Reading Class Students below expected AR progress. Students read AR book daily to help achieve AR trimester goal. AR Tests can be taken during this time. Teacher monitored!

29 Enrichment Students who are meeting grade level standards in math and language arts Enrichment classes are based on content areas and teacher. Students sign up from a select menu. Enrichment classes rotate every six weeks.

30 Changing Classes It is possible for students to exit an E period designed for intervention by showing consistent growth in E period, increasing AR level, as well as passing the core academic courses. It is also possible for students who start in an Enrichment class to be placed in a targeted instruction, study skills, or AR reading class, if their test scores or organizational skills show they need extra help.

33 Snake Skins Earned for positive behavior in the classroom and on campus. Snake Skins can be turned in for weekly drawings (Cobra Cash). Trimester drawings.
