Warm up - What is an argument? Give an example of a time you tried to convince someone of your side of the argument.

An argument is a reasoned, logical way of demonstrating that the writer’s position, belief, or conclusion is valid. Arguments seek to make people believe something.

3 Every solid argument must have a claim

4 Evidence must support your claim.
W1. Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. EVIDENCE Evidence must support your claim. Unlike claims, evidence is indisputable. Example: Matapeake Middle School has the highest test scores in the county.

5 REALLY good arguments include the counter claim.
W1. Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. COUNTER CLAIMS REALLY good arguments include the counter claim. Counter claim- A solid and reasonable argument that disagrees with your claim. Example: Claim- Nutella is a healthy snack. Counter Claim- Nutella has 200 calories in it for every 2 tbsp. 
