2 Social environment Yes! there are thousands of disadvantaged children in the inner (industrial) cities of Germany! Group 1: children with immigrant background feeling like a foreigner their whole lifes.. emotionally closed, -unable to learn the german language -„bad“ at school -end up in the so-called „special schools“ Why are they emotionally closed? Are there disadvantaged children in Germany?

3 Group 3: children of unemployed people -They receive a very modest economical support from the goverment -Some parents are alcoholized, watch TV the whole day, their daily diet is VERY bad Group 2: parents are very badly paid, have two–three jobs and.. no time for their kids Social environment

4 Can we do anything to help these childrens and their families? Yes, but we HAVE to start at very young ages! Perspectives

5 Heidelberg Ludwigshafen Pilot proyect in Ludwigshafen with support of the BASF and the University of Heidelberg Natalie Fischer Cecilia Scorza 790 teachers 27 teacher trainings in 3 years 500 Euros / Kindergarten

6 A multi-task project… Integration of the parents Training on astronomy Implementation UNAWE UNAWE Training on Mathematics & Natural Sciences, Language 80-90 % children with immigrant background!!

7 Content of the training Categorization and scales, beauty of objects Introduction to the UNAWE idea (cultural and social aspects) Modul 1: The Earth-Sun-Moon as a system (Earth awareness) Modul 2: The Earth in the Solar System Modul 3: The world of the constellations  Myths and stories Modul 4: Our place in the Milky Way and the families of galaxies Observations (of the Moon, planets, constellations) Constraints: Face-to-face programme (no computers, no internet facilities!) Teacher training: 2 days, 2 nights, 1 supervision day Teacher training at the Heidelberg Observatory
