Unit 5

 Know your topic and become an expert  Have an idea what the background is of your audience is so you will know how much detail to go into and what kinds of things you may have to define  Prepare an outline of topic. Bullet or number the main points

 Visual aids (maps, photos, film clips, graphs, diagrams, and charts) can enhance a presentation.  Keep visual aids simple and uncluttered  Use color and contrast for emphasis but use them in moderation.  Use a font large enough to be seen from the back of the room – chart paper

 Any reference materials like a glossary of terms, or even pictures or graphs, and other information pertinent to your oral report  This is optional. If you know that you will use handouts, let me know and give me a copy of it by tomorrow so I can make those copies for you.

 Practice giving your presentation to yourself or with someone else and time yourself.  It cannot be too short or too long. About 5-8 minute presentation should suffice. We need to make room for any questions or discussion time after the presentation.

 Good preparation should help with your nervousness.  Your presentation may not go exactly as you like but usually go better than you think.

 Begin by telling your audience what your topic is and what you will be covering.  Avoid reading  Dress neatly and appropriately  Speak in a clear, audible voice, loud enough to be clearly heard in the back of the room  Good posture  Make eye contact with you audience  Talk to the audience and not hide behind your visuals or talk to your shoes, or talk to the wall, etc.  Ask for questions at the conclusion of your presentation  End your presentation by concluding with a strong remark to reinforce why your information is of value.  Show some enthusiasm.

 Listen politely  Make occasional eye contact with speaker  Take notes or jot down interesting facts  Control negative facial expressions  Control bored body language  Do not put your head down on the desk or tilt your head back to sleep  Control the impulse to constantly check watch  Expect a Question & Answer period to be part of the presentation  Participate in  Question & Answer period, either by listening or by posing a question Prepare to remain attentive throughout the Q&A
