5 Homework! Homework will be assigned in Vocabulary and Math every Monday through Thursday. Your child should bring his or her homework journal or folder with spelling and math homework back every Friday to be checked by the teacher. We will model how to do the new spelling vocabulary homework activities in class with the students for their first week of homework. Homework should not take more than 20-30 minutes each night in addition to the 20 minutes spent reading. Thank you for your support with homework!

7 Folders, Folders, Folders! Daily Take Home Folder--This folder will contain any completed work and daily communication journal. This folder should be returned to school each day.

8 What We Learn in First Grade... Math—Common Core Curriculum. Focus on problem solving and number sense. Reading--Phonics, Word Families, Comprehension Strategies, Fluency Writing--Personal Narratives, Book Reviews, Friendly Letters, All About __, Realistic Fiction, Poetry

10 Why the Common Core Standards? The standards are the result of a national movement to provide an equitable, coherent, focused, and rigorous curriculum. The standards will enable our students to be college and career ready in order to compete globally.

13 Grading Policy I--Independent * Student is doing an amazing job and performing assignments independently and correctly W-With Assistance * Student has completed the assignment correctly with strong assistance or guidance from the teacher. N-Not Apparent * Student does not show mastery or partial mastery of the assigned skill at this time.

14 Flexible Grouping As your child grows academically, he or she may fit in better with different reading or math groups outside of the homeroom placement. Therefore, your child may be taught by another first grade teacher for math or reading. We will exercise flexible grouping throughout the year to ensure that your child receives the appropriate levels of instruction at all times.

You may contact your child’s teacher by email at any time or call the school during our planning time, 12:45 to 1:15, if you have any questions or concerns. 18 What is Vocabulary Foundations? Research Based spelling program that focuses on word study. Students learn patterns through sorting activities that compare and contrast word features. Students apply and practice through daily writing and reading.

20 WORD STUDY AT HOME Word Sorts: students sort for the pattern Word Hunts: students search for the pattern in a variety of text Word Associations: write additional words that connect to the target word or pattern Vocabulary: students find new and interesting words to put in their notebooks
