5 What can you expect from this class?  An understanding of various biological concepts, including:  Ecology  Taxonomy  Evolution  Cell Processes  Plants  Animals  Genetics  Enhanced understanding of scientific method/inquiry  The ability to pass the Biology EOC!!  Preparation for future science classes (at high school or collegiate level)

6 What materials do I need for this class?  Dry erase Markers  2 ½ ” - 3” 3-ringed binder with loose leafed paper  Tab Dividers (10-15)  Post-it notes  1 package of 50-100 standard size notecards  Writing utensils w/ erasers  Pencils  Colored pens  1 vinyl folder (hole-punched)  Reference folder (syllabus, lab safety contract, list of 80 standards to be covered).  MAY want page protectors RECEIVE 20 BONUS POINTS FOR HAVING ALL MATERIALS BY MONDAY, AUGUST 10 th !!

7 What do I expect from you?  A positive attitude EVERYDAY!  Hard work; clear effort put forth  The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. -Vince Lombardi  RESPECT  For others (i.e. classmates, teacher, staff, etc.)  For materials  For classroom  SPACE IS LIMITED!! Be aware of your surroundings and space!

8 What do I expect from you?  Arrival to class ON TIME with required materials  Not in your seat when 2 nd bell rings = tardy  Lacking required supplies = tardy  Failure to begin work on DNA = tardy  No cell phones allowed, unless teacher instructs you of otherwise!  No outside food or drink allowed!  Bottled water with a cap will be permitted.

9 PROCEDURES What is the difference between a procedure and a guideline or rule?

10 What do I do when I arrive to class? 1. Pick up on YELLOW 2. Have a seat 3. Review the day’s learning target. 4. Review the day’s agenda. 5. Begin work on DNA: DO NOW ASSIGNMENT  Posted on SmartBoard  Will be provided within a weekly DNA handout. ***MUST have begun completion of these procedures BEFORE THE SECOND BELL RINGS!!! CONSEQUENCE: TARDY!!!!

11 What do I do if I need to leave class?  Hall Passes = 3 per semester  If you need to leave class for any reason including: Restroom, nurse, office, locker  Complete the back of the hall pass (i.e. Name, Date, Reason for leaving class)  Politely ask teacher to sign the back  QUIETLY exit classroom, and return promptly  Place into designated place on back bulletin board ***NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

12 What do I do if I’m absent?  Check the folder of the day(s) you were absent.  Located on the back bulletin board.  For DNA: “Absent”

13 What do I do if I have an off-topic question?  Questions are GOOD!!  Write them on a post-it note and stick it to the “Parking Lot”  Will be discussed at a later time.

14 What do I do if Ms. Bennett raises her hand?  You should raise your hand, also.  You will go “FAR”  F = Freeze (including your mouth)  A = All eyes on teacher  R = Ready for instruction

15 What do I do when I leave?  Gather ALL of your materials and TAKE THEM WITH YOU!!  Assignments left behind will be discarded.  Return any classroom materials to their appropriate location.  PUSH IN CHAIR!!!

16 Notebook  All student work (Notes, worksheets, etc.) will be kept in a 3-ringed binger.  Notebooks must be in order ; each page should be labeled with corresponding number on table of contents. (List on side board)  A table of contents will be made for each unit and placed in the front of that unit.  Notebook should be kept to review for the final COMPREHENSIVE exam (EOC)  If ALL units are kept and in order at end of year, 3 % points will be added to your overall grade.  Notebooks will be checked on Study Guide Days  If not submitted, student may NOT take exam!!!  20 points will be deducted from notebook grade for every day that it is late.

17 Homework & Grading  Attendance/Absences/Makeup Work: According to school policy, you must make up, within one week, tests, quizzes, and laboratory work missed due to excused absences. Homework assigned prior to an absence must be turned in the day you return, and homework assigned during your absence the day after you return, unless I extend the deadline because of unusual circumstances.  Homework (formative assessment) Policy: Assignments are to be neatly completed on appropriate paper. Late work will receive only partial credit.  In order to ensure that you have the opportunity to be successful on each summative exam, you will NOT be permitted to take the exam if you have any 0’s in the gradebook.  Grade Distribution :  20% Final exam  10% Formative Assignments  70% Summative Assessments

18 Grading: Summative Exams  STANDARDS-BASED GRADING!  70% of your final grade will come from scores on 80 learning targets covered in Biology  Unit exams will be divided into learning targets  For Example: a unit exam over Ecology will include 12 individual exam scores b/c it assesses you on 12 different learning targets  How many points is this SINGLE exam worth?  How is your grade determined?  Based upon # of correct responses  4= 100%  3=75%  2=50%  1=25%

19 Grading: Summative Exams  Re-testing: Students may retest ONCE over any standard and the highest score will be recorded.  In order to retest, students must complete all assignments for the unit and any additional assignments deemed necessary by the instructor.  Re-tests forms may vary (oral, written essay, multiple choice, etc…)

20 Extra Credit  Complete Notebook at the end of year = 3 pts added to overall grade  You must have received 100% for EACH UNIT (i.e. MUST be complete, and ON TIME)  Remind101 sign-up, Hall Passes at the end of the school year, School Supplies by MONDAY AUGUST 10 th, other extra credit points TBA.
