8 The ICAP journey… Awareness & Dissemination 2010 - 2011 Building bridges and readiness, training and planning Implementation 2011-2012 Making meaning of the ICAP, engaging in activities and process Implementation Continued 2012-2013 Reviews and Revisions where necessary Transformation 2013 – 2014 ICAPs fully implemented and new assessment system begins

9 Individual Career and Academic Plans Legislative review During the spring of 2009, the Colorado General Assembly passed the School Finance Bill (SB 09-256). This legislation requires the State Board of Education to establish standards for Individual Career and Academic Plans (ICAP) for students enrolled in public schools in the state on or before February 1, 2010. The legislation specifies that at minimum, each ICAP shall include: –The student’s effort in exploring careers, including interest surveys that the student completes; –The student’s academic process, including the courses taken, any remediation or credit recovery, and any concurrent enrollment credits earned; –The student’s experiences in contextual and service learning; –The student’s college application and resume, as they are prepared and submitted; and –The student’s postsecondary studies as the student progresses.

10 Individual Career and Academic Plans Legislative review Each public school shall assist each student and his/her parent/legal guardian to develop and maintain the student’s ICAP no later than the beginning of ninth grade but may assist the student and his/her parent/legal guardian to develop and maintain the student’s ICAP in any grade prior to ninth grade. This may include the use of various college preparation and planning services.

11 Individual Career and Academic Plans ICAPs Required SB09-256 Rules adopted February 2010 District Plans 09-2010 9 th Grade Plans 09-2011 ICAPs & PWR Attributes Assessments System, December 2010 College ICAPs proposed in Higher Education Strategic Plan, November 2010 ICAPs & HB10-1273, Progress of visual and performing arts courses

12 Next Steps: CDE in partnership with CDHE and the Community College System will coordinate resources to create ICAP best practices; CDE will convene stakeholder workgroups to: Explore valid and reliable methods to examine ICAP effectiveness; Discuss methods for ICAPs and American School Counselor (ASCA) standards alignment; and Examine ways to strengthen the ICAP connection to the postsecondary and workforce readiness attributes (SB 08-212). Develop standard definitions for recording and reporting ICAP elements. Common metrics and standardized approach to ICAP implementation Works to inform a common template

33 How do we take this back? Conduct an Inventory of what you are already doing, offering and needing. Consider the Individuals, the Community Members, the existing tools that can be utilized (e.g. CTE, CiC, EPAS and more!) Remember the process, scope and sequence, the milestones, alignment to PWR, the BIG picture = Comprehensive Guidance! Don’t loose hope, let go of the cause or falter under ‘negative ninnies’!

37 Considerations: Do I know who to call on to assist in our ICAP process? How aware am I, currently, in the various tools and resources that my school has access to that support Career and Academic Planning? Am I aware of the connections ICAP has with our other statewide initiatives? From what I already know, how does ICAP and PWR connect to my districts’ / buildings’ strategic plan? From what I know now, in what way(s) can we strategically implement ICAP to support our own data collection goals and more? Considering our current education budget crisis, how can our ICAP and PWR process be as innovative, creative, sustainable and resourceful as possible?
