Computers Inside and Out Components and Their Care

Basic Components of ALL Computing Input Processing Output Storage

Basic Computer System Input Devices Processor Output Devices Storage Devices

Input Devices Devices that aid in transferring information or data into the system for the purpose of processing

Central Processing Unit The CPU is the computer or the “box” itself. Within the box are all the components required to connect the microprocessor to the input and output devices to complete the process Its sometimes known as the computer’s brain.

Output Devices Devices that display data derived from prior input and processing.

Storage Devices You may store your files several places on your computer system. These are classified in three basic types of storage devices: Hard drives or hard disks Local Network/Server Flash drive CD-R or CD-RW

Peripherals A peripheral is any part of a computer other than the CPU or working memory. Examples are disks, keyboards, monitors, mice, printers, scanners, cameras, microphones, and speakers

Your Computer System… Network Server

Caring for the System In order to insure the system is available to all students in the best possible working order, we should do our best to maintain the system and keep it clean and free from foreign objects and substances.

What lab rules help maintain the system? No candy, gum, food, or drinks No permanent markers or pens at any time Use pencils when completing “paper” exercises Keep all books, backpacks, and other personal items away from the work area RESPECT the system and your classmates

The CD-Tray Use the button to eject and insert CDs Be patient! Do not place foreign objects in the tray or the tray opening

Cleaning the Monitor - CRT DO NOT touch or tap screen with metal objects, pens, pencils, or fingernails Avoid touching the screen with fingers Clean monitor with commercial cleaners designed specifically for monitors OR soft cotton cloth and non-ammonia cleaners DO NOT use baby wipes as they contain lanolin

Cleaning The Hard Surfaces Dust when possible Cleaners such as Windex or 409 may be used on hard surfaces of the computer Spray the cleaner on a soft cotton cloth and then applied to the surface. Spraying liquids directly on a computer component is never a good idea because of the electronics.

Cleaning The Hard Surfaces Openings such as the floppy drive, CD- Tray, and fan should be cleaned with canned air to remove dust which accumulates The work area should be cleaned daily Clean under the monitor, CPU and other hardware on a regular schedule

Proper care and cleaning will insure that your computer system is ready to help with your daily tasks. Computers will be a part of your daily life. Learn to care for them and utilize their vast capabilities.
