7 Televison in South Africa Broadcasting is supervised by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA). This was set up in 1994, so media would be free from political control. South Africa Broadcasting Corporations controls three domestic channels. The country’s first broadcast nationwide was in 1976. At this time the government resisted the introduction of TV. They feared it would decrease the state’s control over press and radio. In 1998, 85% of the population was able to receive a television signal.

8 Media in South Africa South Africa has press freedom and was ranked 15 th from among 186 countries in 1998. Major press groups are Independent Newspapers, National Media, Caxton, and Times Media Limited. SABC has 16 radio stations.
