Student College-Career Tracking Report is your student’s status at a glance The Student Career Tracking & Student College Tracking Reports offer more detail into those specific areas Color coding allows you to quickly see what areas your students need additional instruction

12 ACT-PLAN-EXPLORE Tracking

13 Collegiate Entry-Level Transcript
1st page of report is your school’s prior year senior roster Click on a student’s name, and the above one-page report will be created Click on the blue disk to select a host of downloadable options, including PDF

14 Tips & Tricks Each report has a School Year filter to see prior year’s data Clicking on the title of the report will take the report “full screen” and allow you to see more things at once Most reports are multiple pages, clicking the single arrows will take you to the next page; while clicking on the arrows with a bar will take you to the beginning or end of the report You can adjust the size of the report with this drop-down box Use the search box to select for a specific student by typing in all or part of their name Most reports have an “Excel – Friendly Version” link, clicking on this link will strip away all the formatting that tends to create problems in Excel and provides a nicer downloaded report Any of the columns that have the up/down arrows after the name of the column means the report is sortable by that column; clicking it once sorts is A to Z; clicking it a second time sorts it Z to A.

KDE will not make changes to the benchmarks used for accountability. College Placement Tests

18 College/Career Readiness Rate
Based on grade 12 students (graduates or completers with G-Codes in IC) Includes best score on English, Mathematics and Reading from all The ACT State and National Administrations in Kentucky Data reviewed by schools and districts prior to fall reporting Schools and districts are expected to help graduates or completers, which are all students with G-Codes, achieve College and Career Readiness. This expectation shows up in the accountability system in the College and Career Readiness Rate (CCRR). If the student is currently not a grade 11 student, school staff continue to be responsible for student’s readiness, regardless of whether or not the student takes the ACT state administration. Students must achieve readiness by June 20 of the year the student graduates or completes the high school program. Multiple ways to demonstrate college readiness include The ACT (state or national), or the COMPASS and KYOTE placement exams. It is to the student’s benefit to take the state ACT administration since the ACT is the test used for college admission. Note: KDE receives a file with Kentucky student data from Kentucky national ACT administrations to include in the CCRR. Grade 14 student- Alternate K-PREP- A graduation code may not be assigned until a student ages out at 21 or chooses to exit the program. Once a graduation code has been assigned the college/career readiness component is no longer available. The students will become a part of accountability.

19 Demonstrating College Readiness
703 KAR 5:240 Assigned grade level determines state administered tests. 4 Year Graduates Will Take Early Graduates May Take The ACT – Junior year – Grade 11 (required) ACT Compass or KYOTE – Senior year – Grade 12 (optional) The ACT once in high school If benchmarks are not met on the ACT, Early Graduates may take Compass KYOTE It is the school’s responsibility to provide opportunities for their graduates to demonstrate readiness. Students who miss The ACT during their junior year (and have not met readiness on a national test) are given the opportunity to take The ACT Compass or KYOTE in their Senior year. What If… A student doing credit recovery jumps from grade 10 to grade 12 and will graduate this year. How will this student demonstrate college readiness? By taking the ACT Compass or KYOTE placement assessment. A grade 11 student moves into my school after ACT testing is finished. How does this student demonstrate college readiness? By taking the Compass or KYOTE when this student is enrolled in grade 12. A senior moves into my school from out of state. How does this student demonstrate college readiness? By taking the Compass or KYOTE. 703 KAR 5:240: The Kentucky Department of Education has identified that the assigned grade level shall determine the state tests to administer. Students classified as Grade 12 in Infinite Campus take the Compass or KYOTE. The ACT Compass for Kentucky State Testing should only be given to students identified in Grade 12. The Early Graduation regulation is a result of Senate Bill 61 (2013) and is a companion to Senate Bill 97 (2013). To summarize the regulation, beginning in , Early Graduation will be possible for students who intend to move on an accelerated timeline through high school and graduate college ready before the typical four years of high school or age 18. Students who have an approved Early Graduation Intent Form may take the ACT prior to their junior year. Early graduate candidates may only take the ACT assessment once for state testing. ACT Test Coordinators are encouraged to work in conjunction with the student and guidance counselor to provide guidance to the student on when is the best time to take the ACT. Early Graduates may take the ACT at any point and pay for the assessment themselves. ACT scores should be send to the high school for verification. Compass or KYOTE may be administered to students with an approved Early Graduate form, if they did not meet the benchmarks on the ACT. These students do not need to be grade 12 in Infinite Campus. Early graduates will count positive for the cohort year they were assigned to based upon grade 9 date. So an early graduate will be banked for a year and count positive with their regular fourth year graduating class.

20 The ACT All grade 11 students and any approved early graduates. Exceptions are: Alternate K-PREP, Foreign Exchange and First Year EL. Any student retained in grade 11 should complete The ACT assessment again. Administered to all high school juniors in March. Confirm that high schools have determined test site establishment and accommodations procedures. ACT online pilot available. Follow The ACT calculator policy. The ACT Calculator FAQ has been updated to exclude any calculator with a built-in or downloaded computer algebra system functionality.

26 The Future of Compass On June 11, 2015 ACT announced the phase-out of all Compass products by December 2016. The current eCompass system will continue to be used in the school year. KDE will work with our postsecondary partners to determine what is next. KYOTE continues to be available in all subject areas. eCompass is the actual product designation. We will refer to the program as Compass throughout the rest of this training.

27 Commonly Asked Questions
Will Compass scores count toward CCR for students taking Compass for dual credit at a college, even though Compass will no longer be available when they become graduates? Yes How long will scores be available in Compass? eCompass through December 2016 Compass 5.0 through December 2015 What is the replacement for Compass? KDE will work with postsecondary institutions in the next year to determine replacement options How can we know who is eligible to test? Tracking in the JCPS CCR Dashboard CIITS or IC Ad Hoc Report Will Compass scores count toward CCR for students taking Compass for dual credit at a college, even though Compass will no longer be available when they become graduates? Yes. OAA “banks” scores for Compass, KYOTE and ACT to use for CCR when the student graduates or has a G-Code in Infinite Campus (IC). How long will scores be available in Compass? eCompass: Student results will be available through December Please print and retain all student results in the district for use at a later time. Compass 5.0: Student results are available through December All pilot schools should print and retain printed results for future student use. What is the replacement for Compass? KDE will work with postsecondary institutions in the next year to determine the replacement options. The Monday DAC will contain news of the selection(s) when more information is known. How can we know who is eligible to test? You may track CCR status using the JCPS CCR Dashboard. CIITS or IC Ad Hoc Report - Schools may create their own reports in IC or CIITS to retrieve all assessment information on students. KDE is currently working on a CCR report in CIITS to show all ACT, Compass & KYOTE tests for each student regardless of grade.

28 ACT Compass College placement test administered through KDE and available to grade 12 students who have not met the CPE benchmarks on the ACT. College Ready Status – JCPS CCR Dashboard Compass Training Series and Update Open August 3, 2015 – July 15, 2016 Follow The ACT calculator policy. The ACT Compass Training Series is a set of 7 voice-over PowerPoints designed to train new staff and help existing staff through report creation and updates. An ACT Compass Update Training covers policy changes and system updates; training lasts about 30 minutes. Student results available through December 2016. Any calculator with a built-in or downloaded computer algebra system, such as ZoomMath, cannot be used on Compass.

29 Collaboration with Postsecondary
Postsecondary institutions who have entered into agreements with KDE have instant access to student scores. Representatives may access student scores only if the student has shown an ‘academic interest’ in the institution. To provide current student ACT Compass scores for placement, KDE allows postsecondary institutions to access student scores throughout the school year. Specified personnel at each public two-year and four-year institution have been given access to the KDE ACT Compass system. College/university representatives may access score reports from any student who has shown an educational interest in the institution. These postsecondary institutions have direct access to student scores: KCTCS University of Pikeville Western Kentucky University Eastern Kentucky University Kentucky State University Morehead State University Murray State University University of Louisville University of Kentucky Northern Kentucky University

30 Collaboration with Postsecondary
Testing at high school and postsecondary allowed Two Compass tests per eligible subject (KDE System) Follow guidelines at college/university for Compass testing Score report for postsecondary Electronic access at admission office Paper copy from high school

31 Second Administration
Seniors may take each eligible assessment twice. Students receive intervention First ACT Compass administration Students who did not meet benchmarks complete an additional intervention (MINIMUM FIVE DAYS) Second ACT Compass administration Steps: For ACT Compass testing, the expectation is for students to test at the completion of an intervention. The U.S. Department of Education defines an intervention as an educational practice, strategy, curriculum, or program. A quality, effective intervention is one that begins with the analysis of individual student diagnostic data for the purpose of designing and implementing an appropriate research-based intervention. Students who receive a quality intervention may take Compass. Students who did not met benchmarks and complete an additional intervention may take a second ACT Compass administration.

32 Reminders Testing system turned OFF for school
Students may test only TWICE with KDE’s Compass Offenders of this rule 1st Offense—Written Warning to DAC 2nd Offense Testing system turned OFF for school Appropriate Practice/Use Form completed and returned to KDE before system reactivated 3rd Offense Testing allegation Removal of individual(s) from system Students that do not meet the benchmarks on the ACT are eligible for the Compass assessment; each student is eligible to test twice in a school year with the KDE Compass. Students may also test with KYOTE or at a college in the same school year; these administrations do not count toward the two Compass tests from the KDE Compass system. Submitting a Compass Test Irregularity Spreadsheet will remove test results when a technical error has occurred. These results will remain in the KDE Compass system but will be removed by OAA from the final results. Failure to submit an Irregularity Report with technical testing issues to the DAC and KDE will result in the penalties outlined in the slide.

33 Incorrect SSID Students must test using their name and SSID as it appears in Infinite Campus Testing under an incorrect SSID may be corrected by: Editing the student record to enter the correct SSID, if no other tests have occurred. Merging the two student records, if tests have occurred under both SSIDs. KDE can assist with this process. Send an with the: Student Name DOB Correct SSID Incorrect SSID Tests taken under incorrect SSID

34 Improving Writing Skills Scores (English)
Give Writing Skills assessment first or by itself. (Use practice PDF file on Compass website.) Thoroughly cover directions with students. Highlight each sentence. Re-read passage from the beginning. Get better results on Writing Skills Writing Skills Discussion Among U.S. Colleges In 2014 colleges around the country began a discussion about students who performed well in Reading were scoring poorly, single digits, on the Writing Skills assessment. The following information is not a scientific result, but a consensus from those administering Compass tests. First, administer the Writing Skills when the student is fresh – not following another assessment. There is a practice document on the Compass website that is static, but still a good way to practice the skills. Secondly, colleges have discovered that students do not understand the directions for taking the Writing Skills. The students are still focused on answering questions and not editing the text. To make the directions more meaningful, remind the student to highlight each sentence. Then check against the right-hand side of changes. Re-read the passage from the beginning. And better results are seen on the Writing Skills!

45 Administrator Tests These tests are designed to assist administrators in becoming familiar with the online test. These are live items and are not to be shared with anyone or used to prepare for the Compass tests. ONLY Test Administrators are allowed to view these tests. Using Administrator Tests 11111 and any combination of five numbers Once the number/name combination is used, keep using the same combination NOT for students Check with Ryan to see if your school has an administrator test login registered. Treat these online tests as if you are holding a paper copy of a K-PREP test booklet. The same restrictions apply to both types of tests. Multiple administrators may watch as one administrator takes a Compass test. No students should be in the room when an administrative test is occurring. These tests are allowed only to give administrators a feel for how to work the controls and should not be used for test preparation of students. Compass is an untimed, adaptive test that will change questions based on the answer a student gives to the current test item. The test is comprised of items from the pool and may be different for each student.

46 Test Irregularity Spreadsheet
Use to report test sessions that experienced technical difficulties and should be removed from the system. Compass Irregularity Report template can be found on the JCPS Testing Unit website. Submit Irregularity Reports to Ryan Goepper via on a monthly basis. Test sessions reported will be checked by KDE and an will be returned to the school and DAC.

College Readiness Placement Exam for Seniors

49 KYOTE Kentucky Online Testing placement exams for grade 12 students who have not met the CPE ACT benchmarks in English, reading or mathematics. Trainings are available in August on the KDE website. Program details are available from the user manual and the training sessions. Irregularity Report Spreadsheet Follow KDE calculator policy. Different from Compass placement exam in the Mathematics area. Students who score 19 or above on the ACT are considered to be college ready. Students who score between have the choice to take or not take the college Algebra exam. Students whose planned major does not require college Algebra may decide not to take the KYOTE College Algebra exam. Students who will need to take a college Algebra class will want to take the KYOTE College Algebra exam. New KDE KYOTE page contains links to the user manual and the KYOTE website. The KYOTE page at KDE also contains the new Irregularity Report Spreadsheet. It is used the same way for Compass – to report to KDE what happened while a student was testing online and why this student has more than one score. Please encourage teachers to use the SSIDs when creating student accounts. It helps with matching the student with scores. KDE:OAA:DSR: jb:7/17/2015
