6 ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS First Quarter In this unit students will study the major differences in poems, drama and prose. Students will study the major differences in poems, drama and prose. They will use details and examples when forming inferences when explaining what the author said in a text. Real and imaginative narratives, using descriptive and figurative language to show characters’ thoughts and feelings, will be the writing focus for this unit. Math First Quarter Expand Understanding of the Place Value System to Compare Whole Numbers Use Addition and Subtraction in Problem Solving Operations and Problems Involving Measurement Understand Factors, Prime, and Composite Social Studies First Quarter Coming to the Carolinas The points of focus in this unit include the impact of people and place on the economic, politic, and social development of North Carolina communities, the settlement patterns of diverse cultural groups, and the impact of historical events on communities. Students will develop an understanding of How the settlement patterns of diverse cultural groups affected the development of regions in North Carolina. Changes to communities throughout the regions of North Carolina brought about by people, events, and developments. The role of North Carolina in major conflicts and wars (American Revolution, Civil War) and the impact of such historical events on communities. Science First Quarter Understand the effects of environmental changes, adaptations and behaviors that enable animals (including humans) to survive in changing habitats. Understand food and the benefits of vitamins, minerals and exercise.

7 Homework is assigned nightly. Math HW is assigned each night. This reinforces what we have learned in class. Students are expected to read 20-30 minutes a night. Monthly AR goals are assigned. PLEASE CHECK PLANNER AND WEBSITE FOR ASSIGNMENTS!

8 Moore School follows the seven point grading scale. Grades are posted weekly online. Check in the office for info on how to login to Parent Assist. Grades are ranked in four categories: Test, Quiz, Classwork, and Participation. Each carries a different weight with test have the highest. Papers are sent home weekly in the Tuesday packet.

9 YOU are your child’s best advocate. Supervising homework helps reinforce how important school is to your child. Reading is the key to success. Asking questions about what is being read keeps your child focused on the task. Reading the Tuesday packet shows your child you care! Life is so busy and we are all booked to the max, but try to remember your child gets one shot at this! We are working together to help each child experience SUCCESS!!!!
