Teacher Page I. Scientific Inquiry, A. Processes of Scientific Inquiry Missouri science standards 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 2.1, 2.7 7th grade science MAP assessment. Students should be able to view various forms of information to interpret and evaluate; organize information in text, tables, and graphs. View presentation before using lesson with students to view mouse click operations. Application slide is used to connect Lesson One and Two. Scoring guide page can be used for peer grading of lesson.

The following data table displays information about the effect of calcium chloride on the temperature of water. Containers A through D each contain 100 ml of water. Study the table.

Construct a line graph using all the information in the data table. Be sure to provide labeled axes with number scales for your graph. Give the graph a title.

Making a Graph Title related to the data Determine the independent variable. Place label on horizontal axis (X axis). Determine the dependent variable. Place label on the vertical axis (Y axis). Assign number scales for each axis.

Plotting your data on a line graph. Plot a point for each value in the data table. Find the temperature on the X axis and the amount of calcium chloride on the Y axis. Extend a line from each value and place a point where the two lines meet.

Interpret your data Using the information in the table and on your graph, write an appropriate conclusion regarding the effect of calcium chloride on the temperature of water.

Application A local highway department is considering using calcium chloride to melt ice on the road in the winter. However, there are questions about the effects of calcium chloride that should be answered before the final decision is made. Your task is to write such a question. Be sure your question is testable using scientific procedures.

Scoring guide One axis labeled with the amount of calcium chloride and the other axis labeled with the temperature. Number scales indicated with correct intervals. Line graph with data accurately plotted. Title: Amount of calcium chloride…….. Conclusion: the greater the amount of calcium added to water, the greater the temperature OR the addition of calcium chloride causes the temperature of water to increase. Total score 5 points - one point for each key element listed above.
