Psalm 2 - A Royal Psalm A celebration at the coronation of the King in spite of the opposition by the rebellious peoples around them.

Psalm 2:1-2 1 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,

Psalm 2:3 3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.”

Psalm 2:1-3 - The Rebellion The King is amazed that the nations would seek to devise a plot destined to fail. Every King anointed by a prophet was a "messiah" or "anointed one".

Psalm 2:1-3 - The Rebellion If that King obeyed God, God would support his rule. The plans of those opposed were spoiled by God's intervention.

Psalm 2:4-5 4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision. 5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:

Psalm 2:6 6 “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”

Psalm 2:4 - The Response of God God is pictured in heaven high above the kings laughing at their plans against Him.

Psalm 2:5-6 - The Response of God God's contempt for their plans seen in His response of "wrath". God instead plans to install His King to put an end to the rebellion.

Psalm 2:5-6 - The Response of God "Zion" mentions 40 xs in Psalms. Zion = the temple area, later the entire city of Jerusalem. "holy hill" = the temple mount.

Psalm 2:5-6 - The Response of God "When God establishes His King He also subjugates those who oppose His king." (" The Bible Knowledge Commentary", p. 792)

Psalm 2:7 7 “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.

Psalm 2:7 - The declaration "the decree" = The Davidic Covenant 2 Sam. 7:14 When David became king, described as a "father-son" relationship. "son" = messianic overtones

Psalm 2:7 - The declaration "You are My son" The king's legitimate right to rule. "Today" Coronation day

Psalm 2:7 - The declaration "I have begotten you" The king becoming God's son Heb. 1:5 Acts 13:33-34 Jesus = the Son of David

Psalm 2:8-9 8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”

Psalm 2:8 - The declaration The adopted son inherits the Kingdom from his "Father". An invitation to ask for the Kingdom which someday will encompass the ends of the earth.

Psalm 2:9 - The declaration All rebellion will be crushed. Egyptian kings used to smash jars of pottery symbolic of rebellious cities or nations.

Psalm 2:10-11 - The exhortation 10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling.

Psalm 2:12 - The exhortation 12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

Psalm 2:10-11 - The exhortation The nations are encouraged to submit before the wrath begins. God often referred to as the King in the Psalms.

Psalm 2:10-11 - The exhortation "serve", "rejoice", "fear", and "trembling" = describe the righteous in worship. Humility and exaltation, not arrogance and gloom.

Psalm 2:12 - The exhortation Submit to His rule before you are destroyed.

Psalm 2:12 - The exhortation Only in the son is there safety from God's wrath.
